A day in the life of President Bush (4/23/06): photos/news; Marines/sailors

PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: President Bush will spend much of his day with Marines and sailors, attending church and joining them for lunch at the base in Twentynine Palms, CA.

Last night in Indian Wells, near Palm Springs, GWB helped pull in nearly $2 million for the RNC at the Toscana Country Club. Tomorrow, after a speech on immigration in Orange County, the President heads for Las Vegas and a fundraiser for Nevada Congressman Jon Porter. From the podium, the President mentioned dignitaries in attendance such as Dug Sundheim, California Republican Party chairman; Bruce McPherson, Secretary of State; Sen. Chuck Poochigan, R-Fresno, a candidate running unopposed in the June Republican Primary for Attorney General; Steve Poizner, running unopposed for the Republican nomination for Insurance Commissioner and U.S. Reps. Connie Mack, R-FL, and Mary Bono, R-Palm Springs, who happen to be dating but were seated at different tables. In his remarks, the President highlighted the War on Terror and how students need to be prepared for the future.

After his lunch and visit with the Twentynine Palms base Marines and sailors, GWB is expected to spend the rest of the weekend at an undisclosed location in Rancho Mirage.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: Over the past couple of days, the President spoke publicly on a number of issues -- too many to single out one quote. So I've linked to three important transcripts on the White House website. With these links at your disposal, you can read the transcripts at your convenience.

President Bush Discusses Advanced Transportation Technology in California

President Congratulates Iraqi Leadership on National Unity Government Agreement

Folks who have been following this presidency closely from the beginning know that President Bush has been trying to get Congress to pass a comprehensive energy bill ever since 2001. Here is a link to the President's Letter to the American People about his Advanced Energy Initiative, and a summary of the initiative. For those interested, the linked WhiteHouse.gov page also contains a link to download a .PDF copy of the complete Advanced Energy Initiative document. Other than cutting back on our driving and other uses of gasoline, we can't do much about the soaring costs of fuel in the short term. However, we can help the President ensure a more energy-secure future for us and our children and grandchildren. I urge all Dosers (active and lurking) to familarize themselves with the President's proposals, and to pressure your congressional representatives and senators to pass either the entire initiative or those portions of the proposals with which you agree.

God bless the Secret Service Presidential Detail, which can never let its guard down in the face of events like the thrown hoax bomb. In these photos show President Bush's motorcade, bristling with armament and communications equipment, as it drives up a rugged road in the Santa Rosa mountains near Palm Springs, CA, this morning. The President planned to have a mountain bike ride before going to church for Sunday services.

After the ride, the President's motorcade is seen leaving the Santa Rosa mountains.

A man who would only identify himself by his baptized name, Bobby Bible

I wouldn't want to give the press my real name either :)

I posted on yesterday's thread but I don't know if anyone saw it. I went to the doctor's care center today and was diagnosed with strep throat. So I'll live after all :)

Sharing some of the sights the President may see this weekend.

The Santa Rosa Mountains rise like a knife blade from the floor of the Anza-Borrego Desert over a mile into the sky. The mountains are rugged and are designated as wilderness.

The Santa Rosa Mountains as seen from the Salton Sea. There is a National Wildlife Refuge on the southeast side of the sea (where the ashes of my first German Wirehaired Pointer, Jack, were scattered). It was renamed for Rep. Sonny Bono after his untimely death, and is now the Sonny Bono Salton Sea National Wildlife Refuge. During his years in Congress, Sonny Bono worked tirelessly to save the Salton Sea.

Snow geese which stop over at the Salton Sea wildlife refuge during their annual migrations. Among the great privileges of my life was to be at the refuge before dawn several times to see the snow geese arrive. They form a huge spiral of descending birds as they fly in to land. They honk continuously, squabbling over their own patch of territory, and take some time to settle in on the ground.

A California sunset over the Santa Rosa Mountains.

From the Imperial Valley looking toward the Santa Rosa Mountains with a rainbow in front of them.

What great pictures. But we always get great pictures when the President is with the troops, don't we?

Always. Those Marines and sailors are so young and good-looking, it makes me wish I was 19 again. Sigh.

The man who threw the knapsack was detained by authorities and is expected to face criminal charges.

Good.
