A day in the life of President Bush (4/23/06): photos/news; Marines/sailors

PRESIDENTIAL NEWS OF THE DAY: President Bush will spend much of his day with Marines and sailors, attending church and joining them for lunch at the base in Twentynine Palms, CA.

Last night in Indian Wells, near Palm Springs, GWB helped pull in nearly $2 million for the RNC at the Toscana Country Club. Tomorrow, after a speech on immigration in Orange County, the President heads for Las Vegas and a fundraiser for Nevada Congressman Jon Porter. From the podium, the President mentioned dignitaries in attendance such as Dug Sundheim, California Republican Party chairman; Bruce McPherson, Secretary of State; Sen. Chuck Poochigan, R-Fresno, a candidate running unopposed in the June Republican Primary for Attorney General; Steve Poizner, running unopposed for the Republican nomination for Insurance Commissioner and U.S. Reps. Connie Mack, R-FL, and Mary Bono, R-Palm Springs, who happen to be dating but were seated at different tables. In his remarks, the President highlighted the War on Terror and how students need to be prepared for the future.

After his lunch and visit with the Twentynine Palms base Marines and sailors, GWB is expected to spend the rest of the weekend at an undisclosed location in Rancho Mirage.

QUOTE OF THE DAY: Over the past couple of days, the President spoke publicly on a number of issues -- too many to single out one quote. So I've linked to three important transcripts on the White House website. With these links at your disposal, you can read the transcripts at your convenience.

President Bush Discusses Advanced Transportation Technology in California

President Congratulates Iraqi Leadership on National Unity Government Agreement

Folks who have been following this presidency closely from the beginning know that President Bush has been trying to get Congress to pass a comprehensive energy bill ever since 2001. Here is a link to the President's Letter to the American People about his Advanced Energy Initiative, and a summary of the initiative. For those interested, the linked WhiteHouse.gov page also contains a link to download a .PDF copy of the complete Advanced Energy Initiative document. Other than cutting back on our driving and other uses of gasoline, we can't do much about the soaring costs of fuel in the short term. However, we can help the President ensure a more energy-secure future for us and our children and grandchildren. I urge all Dosers (active and lurking) to familarize themselves with the President's proposals, and to pressure your congressional representatives and senators to pass either the entire initiative or those portions of the proposals with which you agree.

George Anich, 69, a Marine photographer in the 1950's and a support of the President's, stood outside the country club. "Has he done things I don't like? Absolutely. But so has my mother," Anich said. [An attitude perfectly expressed, and one we should all remember.]

A gathering also waited to see the President leave Palm Springs International Airport. Among them was Lindon Leti, 17, of Palm Springs, the recipient of the President's Volunteer Service Award for volunteering at the Palm Springs Boys and Girls Club. "He told me that kids like me, young kids, are getting involved in the community. He presented me with a pin," said Leti, a Palm Springs High School senior and soccer player.

PHOTOS OF THE DAY: Two great photos of the day today.

In a photo released by the White House, the President rides with the Travis Air Force Base cycling team in the Los Posados State Forest, in Angwin, CA, Saturday, April 22, 2006. In addition to members of his Secret Service detail, a small number of invited guests also rode with the President, including one Associated Press reporter who wrote the very nice story posted on yesterday's Dose.

President Bush passes a plate to a young Marine as they prepared to get their food at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms, California today.

We saw news versions of these photo yesterday. The versions posted today were released by the White House. President Bush listens to AC Transit Employee Jamie Levin while standing in the doorway of a bus powered by fuel cell technology during a tour of the California Fuel Cell Partnership in West Sacramento, CA, Saturday.

President Bush walks to the podium before delivering a statement on the important milestone Iraqis reached yesterday on their path to democracy.

The media rarely tells us about people who come out in support of President Bush as he travels the country. Yahoo News Photos made an exception in this case, perhaps because the photo is an interesting one. With a United States flag he hung in the background, Elijah Cheakez plays the Star Spangled Banner on a trumpet to honor the visit of President Bush to West Sacramento, CA, Saturday.

Yahoo probably posted this one because of the man's usual name: A man who would only identify himself by his baptized name, Bobby Bible, stands down the road from the entrance of the Marine Corp Air Ground Combat Center in support of President Bush, Sunday in Twentynine Palms, CA.

Some [expletive deleted] decided to distrupt supporters of the President in an exceptionally malicious manner yesterday.

Dressed in a protective suit, a member of the West Sacramento Police Department bomb squad inspects the remnants of a knapsack that was thought to contain a bomb. Police detonated it. The device was thrown into a crowd of people who had gathered for the visit of President Bush to the California Fuel Cell Partnership facility. After the detonation, authorities say it contained some electronic wiring and heavy metal components, and described it as a very sophisticated hoax. The man who threw the knapsack was detained by authorities and is expected to face criminal charges.
