If you're going to argue about things be passionate and if you don't come to a meeting of the minds, agree to disagree

what "agreeing to disagree" really means is that you agree to no longer discuss the topic meaningfully. This actually means that there is a trivialization of your views to the extent that they are discharged from their ramifying effect on countless everyday things. This is the same thing when people "focus on the job". This means that the "job" is transformed into something that is distant from one's person. This is the essence of alienation....and meaninglessness.

One resultant is the accentuation of the trivial which then becomes one's identity: eg.: that you are Irish, or Black, or of Lithuanian ancestry. One's fundamental beliefs and values are not trivial, but they have been made so by the contemporary misunderstanding of "tolerance" or "agreeing to disagree". It is as if the personal were detached from a person's beleifs and values. No wonder he or she soon feels unrecognized, unvalued, unloved.

LOL!

you put it much more bluntly...but YES! EXACTLY!

you should have seen my face when he was telling me this...

I was like "are you kidding... it has taken you two weeks to muster up the courage to talk about a converstaion on gun control? this is serious to you? WOW!"

I didn't SAY any of that... I just sat stunned, listening,...

I thought he was going to tell me he was hurt because I hadn't called him in two weeks.. LOL!

I wasn't all that interested to begin with.. hence not calling him.. I knew it was not going to work, but I figured I would let him be the one to say it....

I was just shocked that THIS was the reasoning.....LOL!

I know a lot of liberals who are just deluded, who may in a few years wake up. But I can't imagine marrying someone in the hope that later he'd learn better, or that I could "convert" him to conservatism. Even if I could respect a liberal, I don't want to argue politics at the dinner table.

I predict that if this thread can stay visible for enough time, it could be a long one.

That being said, I can't imagine being with a woman who defines her political views as liberal. Liberals believe in the murder of innocent children, socialized government, homosexual marriage, and a host of other things that I cannot agree with. Marriage and dating is hard enough as it is and I can't imagine the horror of going through the maddening and pointless debate day after day.

In short, I'm pretty sure no liberal woman would be able to tolerate me.

And where does the hyphenation stop? Suppose Gene Arnold-Smith marries Lester Gober-Weston and produces a daughter, Sue. Is her name going to be Sue Arnold-Smith-Gober-Weston. When Sue marries John Baker-Wadsworth-Dingle-Jones and have a son, William, is his name William Arnold-Smith-Gober-Weston-Baker-Wadsworth-Dingle-Jones?

What happen when William marries Betty Helms-Watson-Dray-Bolton-Meyers-Tatum-Sinclair-Harrison?

Mrs. SmithL and I have been canceling each other's votes for over a quarter century, so far. And neither of us is willing to give up our vote, or our marriage.

Come to think of it, don't Islamo-fascists hyphenate their names? See? I just did it.

"If you make it personal, no relationship is going to last......."

And if it isn't personal, your depth of conviction is definately in question.
