Many in GOP Will Sit Out Bush Talk (Grassroots Angry Over Amnesty)

When President Bush arrives in Irvine on Monday morning to pitch his immigration reform plan, one of his party's best-known local standard-bearers will be maintaining a respectful — and politically careful — distance.

Dana Rohrabacher, the nine-term Republican congressman from Huntington Beach, generally supports the president, but disagrees with his immigration policies. So Rohrabacher plans to sit out Bush's speech to the Orange County Business Council.

"I don't want to be behind him looking glum and not applauding," Rohrabacher said. "So as not to be rude to the president — which I think is inexcusable — I think I'll just be staying away."

Rohrabacher's remarks reflect deep unhappiness within the GOP toward Bush's immigration stance, particularly in Republican Orange County, which is famous as a caldron of border-crackdown sentiment and where many Republicans criticize his guest-worker plan as amnesty for illegal immigrants.

Bush's decision to speak here might prove an embarrassing miscalculation, said John J. Pitney, a government professor at Claremont McKenna College who used to live in Orange County and worked for the national GOP.

"I'm not sure they had their O.C. antennae up," he said of White House schedulers. "They don't realize how complicated this issue is. It's possible this is a Daniel-in-the-lions'-den moment, but that's not really characteristic of this administration."

No need for new legislation, if we just enforce the laws already on the books, and not on the 'poor workers only trying to make their lives better' (MSM, bleeding heart view that does contain just enough of a grain of truth to enable them to trot out the poor sucker who DOES bust butt just like my grandpa did and for the same reason) Instead, whack the 'greedy exploitative' Evil Capitalists who employ them; how much more politically correct could you be; you're not attacking some helpless immigrant but instead fining and/or imprisoning the dirtbag who underbids everyone else because they use illegal labor.

I agree- Tancredo and Sensenbrenner are doing great. So are a few others that voted for HR4437.

What frustrates me in this debate is watching all of those people in the House who banned together, listened to their constituents and supported HR4437- get clobbered by conservatives. Conservatives right here on FR, and even in this thread are threatening to bail on these guys and that irritates me.

I am willing to bet that if HR4437(or some version close to it) can get thru the Senate, the President will sign it. The President can say whatever he would like to about immigration reform, but he cannot write the laws. Only our legislators can write these laws. Unfortunately, those Republican leaders that are for amnesty, are not running for re-election during this cycle.

I promise you this- I will not forget John McCain and his amnesty for all- when he is running in the Presidential primary. Unless, McCain does an about face on most of his policies, he stands no chance of ever getting my vote for anything.

My point about George Bush is that at least he is willing to deal with illegal immigration. The same was true when Reagan was President. At least they are willing to let the heated debate take place, even if people get mad at them. Instead, all of the other Presidents and candidates for President, like Bush 1, Clinton, Gore, Carter and Dole refused to even talk about the issue.

We can never fixed the problem if we are not willing to discuss the problem.

Here is my analysis of what is going on behind the scenes.

Here is some evidence that 'amnesty' increases illegal entries. These people knew before the demonstrations that the time was ripe.

Smith Act of 1940 This is the U.S. statute that ought to apply to the organized gathering of tens of thousands of foreign nationals calling for the overthrow of our country.

I need to make a correction to my previous postings. H.R. 4437 does not simplify the process of documenting employees. The article at that last link says this:

No Elimination and Reduction of Employment Eligibility Documents. One of the few positive aspects of a mandatory employment eligibility system would be the simplification of the hiring process by reducing the number of documents employers would have to verify to one or two. The bill does not do so. Several other reform proposals (such as the Dreier bill, H.R. 98) provide for such simplification by requiring the use of a tamperproof Social Security card and no others. The bill only studies the use of such documents but does not eliminate the use of any documents and the confusion such documents cause employers.

My apologies to all for proliferating confusion on that. This means that H.R. 4437, the best of all bills so far put forward by our esteemed Congress, isn't too good after all.

Understand that the provision that the protesters say is 'racist,' that makes illegals felons, was inserted by the Dems a short time ago. That clarifies why Hillary happened to discover the immigration issue a week before the marches. Why she demonized Republicans as "making Jesus a criminal."

Keep in mind just who organized these protests. Who provided the tens of thousands of T-shirts, the thousands of professionally made signs, the hours and hours of promotion on Spanish language radio and TV stations. It has been noticed that Islamic orgs names and logos appear on some of these signs as well. Remember that NEA teachers and administrators are the ones who have assisted the march organizers by providing bussing for their students, hoisting Mexican flags at school and overlooking the truancy.

Don't forget that the last two Presidential elections were nearly 50/50. Think about how our Congress is looking for a way to appease these foreign nationals through legislation. No election necessary. The outcome of legalizing 11 million illegals and encouraging more to come will be a solid lock for the left forevermore in national elections. We don’t need an ‘immigration’ bill. We need and want a border security and illegal aliens bill. An immigration/guest worker bill can come after that is done.

According to the CNN news show Lou Dobbs Tonight (3/21/05), "Remittances, as they're called, are expected to become Mexico's primary source of income this year, surpassing the amount of money that Mexico makes on oil exports for the first time ever."

The second nasty surprise? Just before the committee approved the bill on the evening of March 27, Sen. Richard Durbin (D-Ill.) offered the "DREAM Act" as an amendment. It passed on a voice vote.

The DREAM Act is a nightmare. It repeals a 1996 law that prohibits state universities from offering in-state tuition rates to illegal aliens. The principle, of course, is that no illegal alien should be entitled to receive a taxpayer-subsidized benefit that out-of-state U.S. citizens can't get. But the committee's bill allows illegals to be treated better than those U.S. citizens on tuition.

Agreed. HR4437, passed in the House, really tightened the laws on those hiring illegal immigrants.

Honestly, there are those employers who have no clue that the person they have hired are illegal. The illegals give them fake papers and fake SS numbers. Employers have very little way of knowing that this stuff is fake.

There are other employers, who are helping illegals come up with the fake papers. Other employers are flat out ignoring getting the documentation required in order to hire someone. These employers belong in prison.

Right now, none of the laws in this county are tough enough on employers who are knowingly hiring illegal aliens. Most states make them pay a fine and that's it. That must change!

What laws does he need? In 2004 the Homeland Security Act approved 10,000 new BP agents over five years time. 2,000 per year. We could have 4,000 new BP agents now but the President, who is the one now invested with the authority to implement that Act, has only approved of 150 new agents.

It is already against the law to hire illegal foreign nationals and the fine can be as much as $10,000 per employee. Where has the will been to enforce the law? It does, after all, lie with the executive branch.

I notice that there are no columns for "deportations, fines levied or convictions." Not that it would matter with this pathetic effort.

Yeah- the laws on the books say to fine the employers hiring these guys illegally. Fines are nothing to these guys, they save millions a year by hiring illegal aliens instead of Americans and we want to charge them a few thousand in fines. These employers are happy to pay fines all year long, it's no big deal.

I say throw the employers in prison. That should deter a few of these employers.

For years and years, no one has done anything about illegal immigration, that should not stop us from doing something now. Increase the fines and start giving jail time.(believe it or not, that is part of what Bush is proposing) Even if it not strictly enforced, that may scare a few employers and keep them from hiring illegals.

The chump change fines are doing nothing. It's time to add to the fines!

Because if liberals get back in, the assumption will be that the current group of Republicans was TOO Conservative, not TOO Liberal.

That is the crux of the matter.

Also, on a side issue—a stunning percentage of the current bureaucracy is at war with this administration and the GOP leadership. Loosing the upper hand will turn all of it over to the Liberals for years to come and solidify these faceless power elites in their positions. These are the people with huge power in Washington. Because you can not just fire civil servants, we have to wait for attrition or misbehavior. If we loose now, as this is going on, we will have to clean house again all over...which takes time and effort, not to mention momentum.

The President is doing some significant house cleaning and may even manage to change the tone in Washington—just not in the way we expected. If we can hold on and win a more battles with our opposition...we are going to see both a different country and a significantly different world in about 10 years.
