I distinctly remember Iran saying they had a bunch of Al Qaeda. They refused to extradite them, or let us question them. This was a few years ago. Lately, I recall hearing some of his sons are there. I think he is still a powerful symbol, but the fact Zarqawi (in Iraq) & Zarahiri have got more press in past few years says to me he's not as important operationally. I also think the Dems harping on his not being captured implies the danger in their reasoning: they see this as just about Al Qaeda, or Bin Laden. The terrorists disagree.

Maybe true that he is not important operationally, but he may be important operationally for the US.
Think about this: Bush lifts Bin Laden's head up over ground zero and shows his head to the world.
In the Demorats mind, the war would be over. You said: I also think the Dems harping on his not being captured implies the danger in their reasoning: they see this as just about Al Qaeda, or Bin Laden. The terrorists disagree.'
Our troops are killing Al Quada in Iraq. Simply put, we are killing terrorist on their turf. This is offense playing defense. The best defense is a strong offense.
BTW: the French have become more preemptive. They have now, preemptively surrendered.
