Bloomberg recalls Boy Scout target practice

4/21/2006, 4:44 p.m. ET The Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) — Mayor Michael Bloomberg, an outspoken gun control advocate, said Friday there is "nothing wrong with people having guns" for recreational shooting, and even recalled his days as a Boy Scout marksman.

Bloomberg is convening a summit of big city mayors next week to discuss what he calls the "scourge" of illegal guns. On his weekly radio show, the Republican explained that he still supports the Second Amendment and said he has no problem with hunting and target practice.

"You want to go hunting and have a gun — you know, I'm not opposed to that," he said.

The 64-year-old mayor, who grew up in Medford, Mass., and occasionally refers to fond memories of Boy Scout camp, said he participated in riflery there and owned a .22 caliber rifle for target practice on a shooting range.

"I see nothing wrong with people having guns, but that doesn't mean you can have a gun every place, and concealed weapons — or even weapons out in the open in big cities on city streets — does not make a lot of sense to me," he said.

Next week's gun summit will bring together about a dozen mayors, including those from Boston, Dallas, Philadelphia, Milwaukee, Seattle and Washington, D.C., to trade information and form a loose coalition for lobbying on Capitol Hill.

"We want to talk about best practices, and how the mayors of all the big cities can get together and pressure Congress to do something about it, because it's a national issue," Bloomberg said.

But evidently Bloomie is opposed to citizens owning guns to use as self defense tools.

Watch how quickly he cuts and runs from this statement once the queers and the ACLU start howling about his support for the Boy Scouts.

As for the rest of what he has to say - piffle. When he says it's okay for people to own guns, he means people like John Kerry, who own custom handmade shotguns that cost more than your car and only take them out for photo ops, or people like Rosie O'Donnell, who want to lock up everyone in this country who owns a gun except for her bodyguards.

"concealed weapons ... does not make a lot of sense to me"

Sigh.

OK Mr Genius Big City Mayor, let me explain it to you.

Criminals come at you all at once. They lie in wait. They don't give you time to call the police, who may or may not get there, and may or may not be activated by 911. And oh by the way, per Supreme Court case law, are not required to protect us individually. So I have to protect myself, SINCE YOU CAN'T. That about sums it up for me.

I thought this was going to be about Bloomberg using Boy Scouts as targets...

Let's face it, under Bloomberg's rules you won't have a gun.

Bloomberg is surrounded by armed guards everywhere he goes. Since this makes no sense to him, when is he going to dismiss them?

"...nothing wrong with people having guns for recreational shooting..."

The Second Amendment isn't about recreational shooting, you moron.

If he's not opposed to long guns, why the licensing requirement in the city to own one? Not everybody can store their hunting weapons at their chalet, like millionaire Mike.

yeah you can have a rifle in NYC- at 140 dollars a pop registration and a three month wait*... oh, and 99 dollars for a finger printing fee.

now a pistol, more than a year wait and over four hundred dollars... and probably hiring an attorney.

*or four or five or six... then there's granting permission to hand over your criminal (if they exist)and medical records.

this guy has never had a problem sticking his hands in my pockets, telling me how I ought to live, what I should be thinking. he's a millionaire socialist.

Never fall for the "hunting" argument. The Constitution says absolutely nothing about a right to hunt. The 2nd Amendment protects the right to remain a free person, via being armed.

"...will illegals be able to carry guns?"

An interesting statement / question.
And another slant: Suppose we renounce our citizenship and become undocumented ourselves?

Wonder how he'd feel about my Elk? In 1983 I took a Bull Elk at the foot of Mt Rainier with a 44 magnum Super Blackhawk at about 30 meters. Dropped him clean. Got about 900 pounds of meat off him. But I took him with a HANDGUN....Wonder how the RINO Bloomie would look at that?

The word "recreation" appears nowhere in the Second Amendment, you doofus.

If Bloomie was using Scouts for target practice, it was most probably with his pants down around his ankles.
