Terri Schiavo Case Is Emerging As Factor In Race For Governor

TAMPA - The political debate over Terri Schiavo's death is emerging as an issue in the 2006 election campaign.

Attorney General Charlie Crist told an audience in West Palm Beach on Thursday that as governor, he would have stayed out of the fight between Schiavo's husband and parents about whether to keep the brain-damaged woman alive with a feeding tube.

A 15-year legal battle appeared to be over last year when Congress, President Bush and Gov. Jeb Bush pressed to intervene legislatively to keep Schiavo alive. Ultimately, the courts sided with Schiavo's husband. She died of dehydration on March 31, 2005, after her feeding tube was removed.

"I am pro-life, and I respect life," Crist, a Republican candidate for governor, said at a gathering of the nonpartisan Forum Club of the Palm Beaches. "There are some decisions that ought to be left to God and family. Had I have been governor, I would have not done the same thing" as Bush.

In an interview, Crist minimized his differences with the governor.

Crist's Republican primary opponent, Chief Financial Officer Tom Gallagher, stood with Gov. Bush last year in trying to pass legislation to keep the feeding tube in after courts had ordered it removed.

When that county probate judge ordered that Schiavo's feeding tubes be removed, and stationed police around the place to make sure children could not bring water to her, it was clearly God's will, as it was God's will that the world should watch the excruciating two-week-long public murder of the woman.

Go Crist.

You know nothing about God's will concerning this or any other case. Try reading the Bible sometime.

that the world should watch the excruciating two-week-long public murder of the woman.

Better that we should artificially extend the excruciating suffering of a vegetative human so we could watch her suffer for 20-30 more years in a hopeless miserable state until she dies anyway...and then applaud ourselves for being so "pro-life".

I think I'm going to throw-up.

Are you saying that she was not starved/dehydrated to death? I would call that being killed. I am not judging anyone, just stating a fact.

Terri was on the road to recovery, learning to walk, communicate, when Michael won his malpractice suit. Hardly PVS, this picture being a couple years after the incident, as her twelve broken bones healed... The audio explains a lot.

Audio of Terri's medical history

TOM GALLAGHER FOR GOVERNOR: NOTES FROM THE TRAIL

Dear Friends,

This week my conversation with Floridians continued throughout our great state.

In Tallahassee, I had the opportunity to meet with the leadership and many members of the Florida Association of Realtors (FAR). FAR advocates on behalf of Realtors, the small businessmen and women responsible for driving Florida’s economic success

My dad was a Realtor, and growing up I saw firsthand the impact Realtors make in helping families pursue their dreams of home ownership. My dad’s work as a Realtor and my business background have always inspired me to work hard on behalf of small businesses, and defend and protect the rights of property owners.

I’m proud to have worked toward many of the same goals as Realtors throughout my career. As a candidate for Governor, I continue advocating for property tax relief, Save Our Homes Amendment portability, insurance rate-relief, protection of our constitution from frivolous amendments and hidden taxes, and a strong defense of private property rights. These are all components of my economic vision for Florida, a reflection of my core economic philosophy, and a product of my conversation with Floridians.

Just this past Thursday I met with Matt Long, a small businessman in Ormond Beach. Over lunch in his sub-shop, Matt told me that he and his wife are expecting their third child, but like many citizens, he can’t move to a bigger home because his property taxes could double. During our conversation I explained that as Governor, I'll work for a property tax relief plan to help Matt and millions of property owners like him. My plan will allow homeowners to move without getting hit with new taxes, and will limit property taxes to growth plus inflation to ease the burden of rising property taxes on all property owners.

No other candidate for Governor has fought harder for Florida’s small businesses and families than I have, and I plan to keep fighting for you as Governor.

This week I also had the opportunity to honor true Florida heroes, our firefighters. I have been blessed with many different opportunities to serve our state, but serving as Florida’s Fire Marshal and working with firefighters continues to be a great honor.

On Tuesday I unveiled the Florida Firefighters Memorial in our state Capitol. The statue, which is displayed alongside the Florida Firefighter Wall of Honor, is dedicated to the men and women who risk their lives on behalf of their fellow Floridians.

I think we should take every opportunity to personally thank our firefighters and law enforcement officers for their commitment to protecting our families and communities. As Governor, I will be a tireless advocate for our first responders.

Finally this week, I know many of you on the trail have been asking me about a recent poll released by Quinnipiac University. As you all know, I believe Republicans expect their leaders to lead based on principles, not polls. However, there is a lesson to be learned from this survey. The poll showed a statistical tie between all the major candidates for Governor. As you have heard from me from day one, this election is going to be close, and Democrats are fiercely campaigning to re-take the Governor’s Mansion.

But the polls and the pundits will not decide this election. You, the heart and soul of the Republican party will decide this election.

Our grassroots campaign is already made up of thousands of volunteers just like you who are committed to defending the core values of our party. Laura and I are grateful for your support to help us keep our state headed in the right direction.

May God bless you all, and I hope to see you on the trail.

TG

FV SAYS: Tom Gallagher's wife went to Notre Dame. (Crist doesn't have a wife.) FLORIDIANS, PLEASE VOLUNTEER AND VOTE FOR TOM GALLAGHER for Governor.

Go here and read down to the duties of the Fla AG. Crist violated his oath by failing to investigate the Medicaid fraud and ongoing civil rights violations against Terri Schiavo. If you think violating an oath of office is conservative, you aren't conservative.

Pls see latest from Gallagher on this thread. Crist is a nightmare candidate.

Florida wouldn't survive him.

There is no statute of limitations on murder. The government should not be a "murder for hire agency". Talk about interference! You either condone husbands getting to kill their wives through the courts or not. That's what happened and nobody stopped him. Protective Services in Florida is a joke.

FLORIDA IS THE STARVATION STATE

The coordination of the rescue by the US Coast Guard was underway and cancelled the morning they were going to fly Terri out of Florida. I do know who cancelled it but have no intention of posting that info.

There are more Terri books coming out. Start reading some of those because I'm not going to be a spoiler for the authors and further, goons in black sedans make homes visits in Floriduh. Florida is not your average state.

Murder has gone up in Crist's hometown of St. Petersburg, Florida. How ironic is that? He's such a wimp. No wonder there's Medicaid fraud, DCF scandals, Terri's civil rights violated to the point of murder and much more while Crist has been Florida's Attorney General.

Sorry, but it wasn't murder and I am very tired of the Terri-bots coming out with a lot of misinformation. I've lived 2 blocks from the hospice where all this has transpired for over 11 years and most people here don't know what they are talking about. The protestors at the hospice were the most arrogant, in-your-face, disruptive people I've ever encountered and I have no use for them. They closed a local school. They shut down neighborhood businesses and then harrassed these businesses for opening on Sundays to make up for the lost work that the protestors caused. These people were disgusting by wearing their self rightiousness on their sleeves and didn't care who they gave problems to and had no respect for other members of the community. They could not protest without dragging everyone down to their visceral level. Terri was brain dead for years. Her brain was liquified. There was no recovery possible. Period. Her parents hired quacks, violated court orders and manipulated evidence. Bush, amongst others, tries to score political point by trying to change the legal system without regards for long term consequences. I, and many other big C conservatives, were very relieved that none of those intrusive changes were implemented and are planning on avoiding any politician that supported such draconian measures to the point of actively supporting their opponents. The federal courts do not belong in family matters and politicians should not be in the business of passing laws for only one individual. It's not the business of government. Terri gave instructions to her husband and the whole legal circus was a result of her parents not being able to let go of their long gone daughter and wanting to get their hands on her money (IMHO). It had gone through more due process than any other case in the country. Time to give it a rest and move on to current and future issues. The voters here will take care of the politicians involved and that's the way it should be.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Wednesday's sit-in at the Governor's Office by students protesting the death of a 14-year-old boy comes a day after Florida's attorney general met with his parents.

Charlie Crist says he wanted to meet with the family of Martin Anderson to express his condolences and to let them know that people care about what happened to their son. He says he also wanted to assure them that everything is being done to find out what happened.

Crist thinks Schiavo murdering his wife was OK.

He is not the kind of Governor we need.

The man who will win is the man who will do something about out of control insurance costs.

No thank you. I read one article from that site. The level of stupidity there gave me a headache. I like Crist's stance on this. Just wish I was in Florida to vote for him
