I dunno. Would they publish an op-ed that stated the opposite was the case?

"The two camps are deeply divided. The business elites are interested in a large supply of cheap labor and support unfettered immigration and open borders. The populist base supports legal immigration but is concerned about lawlessness on our border, national sovereignty and the real security threat posed by porous borders."

So why isn't the "business camp" willing to accept secure borders, but push for loose immigration and work restrictions? Could it be because they know that if the border is secured, they wouldn't be able to get popular support for the idea of loosening restrictions? And if that's the case, then why should their views deserve any consideration, as though they have some kind of equally legitimate interest?

Would they publish an op-ed that stated the opposite was the case?

If the opposite actually was the case, I don't see any reason why they wouldn't.

They've been publishing editorials like this like twice a year.

the elitist Rockefeller business wing and the party's conservative populist base

Dems have a similar problem with conflicts between their old Southern Democrat base and the extremist left-wacko wing.

If the old Southern Democrats and GOP conservative populist base ever joined forces, they could marginalize both the GOP elitist Rockefeller business wing and the Dem extremist left-wacko wing. Otherwise, it will be more of the same.

Whether the two groups can continue to coexist and preserve the Republican majority is increasingly doubtful as conservatives begin to consider -- and in some cases cheer -- the possibility that the GOP may lose control of Congress this fall.

Sometimes a little discipline is needed. If amnesty is to be made law, then to the woodshed they shall go.

Yes there are two camps, Ronald Reagan western, conservative, versus the North Eastern "Republicans" George Herbert Walker Bush (the senior).

As a conservative I know the fight within the Republicans is between the two elements, I also know that the media will always be there to encourage this fight.

But this is a battle within a hard nosed family, Democrats are still the enemy.

1 close the border

2 force votes to define legal immigration in terms of skills and wealth only.

3 force votes to clean up the budgeting process, start with eliminating earmarks.

4 force votes to repeal McCain-Feingold.

5 force votes to permit drilling at Anwar and in the Gulf of Mexico.

6 force votes to permit the construction of new oil refineries

7 force votes to permit the construction of nuclear power plants

8 veto pork until blood runs on the floor even if it means vetoeing massive appropriations measures

9 attack

10 repeat, attack

"the possibility that the GOP may lose control of Congress this fall."

It's called an ELECTION.

When you have an ELECTION all outcomes are POSSIBLE.
(I don't mean personally to you)

The way the left is salivating about November, shows what desperate gluttons for power they are after the American people have been rejecting them since that out of control sick pervert Clinton was reelected way back in 1996.

It makes one wonder what will happen to them if the Republicans actually pull off gains in November.

Like it or not, from the WAPO or not, the truth is the truth.

There is an old Russian adage as to what makes a peasant happy? Answer, that his neighbor's (RINO's) ox would die.

I will not lift a finger to support a RINO GOP, let their damnable ox die.

Bye Bye Republican Party. Frist is going to restart the whole immigration bill again.

The only reason you should vote for a political party is because you are in alignment with their words and deeds.

This year was it for me. I have come to the conclusion that none of the political establishment in Washington serves my interests at all. It is time to be independent and self reliant and to leave the vote whores to all the johns.

I have been a registered Republican for 20 years, have voted in every primary, election, etc. for the past 20 years and have contributed to the Republican Party in every electoral cycle for the past 10 years. I really don't consider myself to be a Republican any longer. They are the neo socialist party.

Bye bye boys, have fun storming the castle.

Good article, but does it all come down to elites vs. populists? On immigration, it's quite likely. But discontent with steel tariffs or prescription drug benefits isn't all populist in nature. There may be some "elitist" opposition in there as well, and some "populist" support. It's similar with pork barrel spending. Everyone opposes it in other states or districts, but many favor it in their own. Was Gingrich truly a populist, or someone who used populist discontent to become part of the elite?

Reagan and Bush both lead complicated coalitions. Some parts of the coalition are more or less libertarian and for smaller government. Others -- not so much. As the country's grown more conservative, expectations have been raised for Bush, even though he's not likely to undertake major steps, that even Reagan didn't undertake. That's not an excuse for Bush, but it may be an explanation: you can't win 51% of the country with a strong "less government" program.

50 years ago most of the populists would have been Democrats. The Democratic Party has traditionally been the one more reflective of the public at large while the Republicans were mostly about the business interests or the very religious.

Written by a pontificating pinhead named Craig Shirley from the Washington Post. Gee, there's a real manly and reliable source, who truly "knows" us.

I'm sure any change in direction we might make will trample this clueless little schmuck - with only a perfunctory warning of, "Excuse me, dipfrikkles - now get the hay out of the way!"

This is typical WAPO editorial crap. This is one Conservative who is NOT cheering the "possibility" that the GOP might lose control of Congress this fall.

First of all, it ain't happening.

Secondly, Conservatives are too smart to bite their nose off to spite their face (well, some are anyhow) and we need the Chairmanship positions.

It certainly doesn't help on other issues as well, spending, and not having Ben Laden standing tall before the man.

Average Joe's are not satified with only having Saddam, a fat, dumb, oaf, in the dock, given us, rather than Ben Laden who is the only one that can satify our need for justice.
