Update: CIA Officer Fired for Leaking Classified Info to Media

WASHINGTON — A CIA officer has been relieved of his duty after being caught leaking classified information to the media.

CIA officials will not reveal the officer's name, assignment, or the information that was leaked. The firing is a highly unusual move, although there has been an ongoing investigation into leaks in the CIA.

One official called this a "damaging leak" that deals with operational information and said the fired officer "knowingly and willfully" leaked the information to the media and "was caught."

Forgive me if this has already been posted, but an interesting tidbit from the latest AP article:

Justice Department officials declined to comment publicly on the firing and whether the matter had been referred to federal prosecutors for possible criminal charges. One law enforcement official said there were dozens of leak investigations under way. Another said there had been no referral from the CIA involving the fired employee, normally a precursor to a criminal investigation.

Remember, in the Plame case, the CIA filed a referral. Here they apparently did not--so it may not be the CIA itself that brought the hammer down on her.

It's too early to know, but maybe someone else spilled the beans about Miss Mary. The Whitehouse was very concerned about leaks 3 or 4 years ago; it is possible that investigations into those leaks revealed Miss Mary's escapade.

I'm late on this and trying to catch up; but per your question on the strange co-inkidinks----back when all the stuff was coming out re: Plame and Wilson; doesn't (or didn't) Wilson have some major connection with some Swiss companies doing mining business in several countries in Africa. I just noted that these people also have ties to Africa and European companies. God only knows how deep this goes----, but the question is, is it going to get dug up???

Here is what the FNC article says about that (scroll to 9th parag): Sources have told FOX News in the past that the CIA prisons/black sites story was referred to the Justice Department for investigation. That story involved the transfer of terror suspects to other countries for questioning. Some believe the CIA transferred suspects to secret prisons in countries where torture is more acceptable; secret prisons and many harsh methods of interrogation would be illegal on U.S. soil. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,192640,00.html
