ATLANTA (April 19, 2006) Conservative spokeswoman Phyllis Schlafly will deliver a lecture on The Failures of Feminism on Thursday, April 27, at 7:30 p.m. in Presser Halls Maclean Auditorium.
Weve wanted to bring a conservative speaker to campus for a while, said Mary Szelistowski, chairman of the Agnes Scott College Republicans, which invited Schlafly to speak. Ive heard Phyllis Schlafly speak twice within the last four months, and I really enjoyed hearing her, and so we thought that she would be a great match for Agnes Scott.
The ASCR membership totals about 100, with 15-20 active members. The student group is hoping for anywhere from 100-300 people to come out for Schlaflys remarks. Sponsorship support is being provided by The Clare Boothe Luce Policy Institute, Szelistowski said.
Schlafly has been a national leader of the conservative movement since the publication of her best-selling 1964 book, A Choice Not an Echo. She has been a leader of the pro-family movement since 1972, when she started her national volunteer organization now called Eagle Forum.
In a 10-year campaign, Schlafly led the pro-family movement to defeat the effort to pass the Equal Rights Amendment. An articulate opponent of the feminist movement, she appears in debate on college campuses more frequently than any other conservative, according to her online biography reports at www.eagleforum.org. Among her many accolades, she was named one of the 100 most important women of the 20th century by Ladies' Home Journal.
The event is free and open to the public and no ticket is required. Additional information may be obtained by calling 404-471-6430.
She also wrote the book, I think it was called "Christy", they had a tv show about it.
And I'm sure there will be many protestors. I attended Karen Hughes' lecture last year and the protestors were up and down the street leading to the campus. Fortunately Karen was allowed to speak without interruption.
And welcome to FR, a new member since "Apr. 21, 2006".
She correctly predicted homosexual 'marrage' way back in the 70's. Everyone laughed at her.
We will know the measure of Agnes Scott by the way in which they treat her.
If they respect her they will earn respect for themselves if they do not they deserve no note of respect from others.
I look forward to seeing you there. Invite everyone you can.. :)
(Also, I've been "lurking" for 5+ years! I just now got around to signing up.)
Those liberal feminists are not fit to touch the hem of Phyllis Schlafly's skirt!
Welcome to Free Republic. If I was closer, I'd try to come.
Is the ASC Republicans a new group? I don't remember them while I was a student there.
Yes.. it was just created last year!
Welcome to Free Republic!
There is also a counter protest in the works. Agnes Scott is an extrememly liberal college. Watch for a very large protest. I'm going to ping this thread to the Georgia forum.
I'm going to try to come; I'm in Dunwoody. Any suggestions on parking?
I have to assume the event will be in the auditorium on S McDonough St. You can park right across the street in the AS parking deck. Otherwise, the Decatur High School parking lot is just across the RR tracks.
Thanks.
Cool, I live in Ormewood Park, and I'll be there.
Visitor parking is on the loop on E. College Ave, but that usually fills up pretty quickly for events so I'm sure they'll have the parking deck on S. McDonough open for visitors.
Also, the lecture is in the auditorium on the SECOND floor, there's something else being held in the auditorium on the first floor.
If everything is full you can probably park in the high school parking lot. It's on the North side of the RR tracks, to the left of the high school at the top of the hill.
Great job, I really enjoyed that!
A repost of my summary of the talk, from the FR Georgia forum:
Phyllis Schlafly was great. She basically gave a brief history of the feminist movement, summarizing what they stood for, contrasting it with what she stood for. This included talking about how she organized opposition to the Equal Rights Amendment.
It was wonderful hearing about so much conservative political history, especially since what you tended to hear of it at the time was filtered through the Old Media, unless you were an Eagle Forum / Phyllis Schlafly newletter subscriber.
The audience questions were a riot. The typical question started with an assertion of something Mrs. Schlafly had supposedly said, followed by a question that basically attacked this supposed assertion. Of course, the assertions were pure strawmen, so they were immediately torn to shreds.
