Seeing the president and the head of another nation toasting each other, reminds me of a story from Harry Truman's oral history.

Early on at Pottsdam conference Truman and Churchill were negotiating with Stalin. Stalin was the host and he kept pooring drinks for all three. He had a bottles of English Brandy for Churchill, Kentucky Bourbon for Truman, and Russian Vodka for Stalin. After about 3 drinks Harry said he picked up Stalin's glass and took a drink... It was PLAIN WATER!!!

ROFL. Very canny guy. Too bad he used it for evil instead of good.

Interesting the VP taking his glasses off to read you would think he would have bifocals or varifocals.

I have got to have varifocals, not sure what prices are in the US for them but it is going to cost me the equivalent of 500.00 dollars.

Where the glasses are used for 3 fields of vision, top part long, middle - mid range/normal and bottom reading. They are fast replacing bifocals in Britain, maybe you call them something different.

Her is link to main supplier of them

Today was an interesting day for me. I attended an all day training session for Microsoft Partners. It was NERD City with a capital N. Most were employees of companies that partner with MS. Many were programers. The rest were IT people that service their companies customers. A few were self employed consultants.

Nerds by their nature tend to be pacifists. In my day most were quite skinny but today they tend to be a bit over weight, Nerds are certainly not the warrior type. Nerds rarely start companies or take real management positions. If they do manage to do a successful startup they still tend to be quite liberal.

I have often thought that the reason the western part of the state of Washington is so liberal, is it is NERD heaven.

So on the breaks and at lunch I expected to hear some comments about how bad things are.. the usual left wing stuff. But the conversations were all about technical stuff. No that long ago there was talk about the high tech bubble bursting and the loss of jobs and the long recession. Not long ago they were talking about how all the Indian outsourcing was taking their jobs and Bush was doing nothing about it.

I didn't hear any of that today. It was all tech stuff. Complaints about the delay in the Vista operating system and the bugs in Windows... about mastering Dot Net with lousy MS Documentation and other technical complaints.

These guys tend to be liberal.. I got the impression that while they may not come out to vote for Republicans, they may not come out to vote for Democrats either. Politics, foreign policy and the economy were not what they wanted to talk about. They were very NERDY!!!

Hi snugs, I have worn trifocals for several years.
Three fields of vision. This is probably what you are talking about. Top to see where I am walking, mid for computer and botom for reading.
