Totally off topic but has anyone been to the Appomattox Courthouse state park? We went this last summer and even the teens (you know teens and history just don't mix) were impressed. They had a reinactor there who played a Confederate soldier. He told the story of preceding battles and how his buddies died and how the war changed their families. He had the whole audience in tears at the end.

Sorry, I had hanging trees on the mind. Just yesterday, I learned that near here a witch was hanged back in the 1800's. Supposedly, she was a slave and was caught practicing witchcraft so was hanged. There's a tombstone with a creepy curse on it so I want to go see for myself.
I'm into genealogy so I frequent cemeteries. Mr. M went with me once and called me over to read an inscription. The grave had rocks around it and had a slab across the top that had broken and fallen in the hole. The inscription was something about this being the guy's second burial. Well, Mr. M made some rude comment about the rocks keeping him in the second time and from down in the hole a horrible loud noise come up! I'm serious. No lie. It was deep and loud. Sort of a cross between a bad guy hollering in a horror movie and huge rocks being moved. We both jumped back and it was a race to the car. Funny thing, Mr. M seems to find excuses not to go cemetery hunting with me anymore.
My Great Grandmother always told us that a ghost reveals itself because it wants our prayers.

As a Christian I'm not sure what to think about 'ghosts' and hauntings.
Although I've heard, and seen, unexplainable things too- how does the idea of a persons soul trapped in a location work with what we are taught? That upon death your soul goes to either glory or damnation upon judgement? Are these people not judged by God and their souls directed accordingly?
Are are even the most benign ghosts the images of the dead being used by other forces?
My aunt owned a two-story home in which someone-she was told- was killed. She just used the upstairs for storage. There was a room her devoted dogs would NOT follow her into. Footsteps and the sound of furniture falling and being dragged also emanated from that room and went throughout the house. We could hear and FEEL the noise downstairs. Many times visitors ran upstairs,disbelieving that it was empty, when they heard the running and furniture dragging noises. All of which stopped when anyone went upstairs.
So how DO we make sense of such things as Christians?
My husband and I have had so many discussions about this. As I said, he was totally skeptical prior to our own experiences here, because of his religious beliefs. He believes when a person dies they automatically go one way or the other...no hanging around. I believe there is so much spiritual activity out there that we don't know about or understand, I don't even try to explain it. I don't need to know all the secrets of the universe, I only need to know Christ.

I prefer to think of it as possible guardian angels or something positive, since I have never felt the least bit threatened.
