Chapter only one in Central California with no female members
Merced resident Michele Arancibia applied for membership to the service organization in March, but was rejected following an April 6 vote. Arancibia and several Elks members say her gender is all that kept her out of the club, located at 1910 M St.
"I realize that there are a lot of old-timers out there," said the 55-year-old Arancibia. "But I didn't think it was still like this. It's sad, really."
The controversy over Arancibia's recent bid for membership began prior to the election when a current Elks member reportedly made phone calls to other members, urging them to attend the April 6 vote.
"I heard that a member had been calling around, asking other members to show up to vote against my joining," said Arancibia.
Several Elks members present at the April 6 meeting confirmed that a member stood up prior to the vote and pressed other members to deny Arancibia membership specifically because of her gender.
"There was a particular individual who stood up and urged members not to vote for females," said Merced resident John Burk, a 20-year member of the Elks.

Used to be that people had sexes and words had genders... Very true!

Arancibia and several Elks members say her gender is all that kept her out of the club, located at 1910 M St. It was probably her sex too.

On the other hand, there already is a "Moose Club" in her area. She looks more like a moose than an elk. She also may try to become an Eagle but she would never got off the ground there.

Actually, the women are in the Doe's.
The men join the Elks, the women the Does.
But some women want in the Elks themselves. It seems sort of silly to me. They just sit around and play cards and have dances anyway.
They do participate in some worthy causes, and Elks looks good on your resume.
I've always wondered, just the same, why people want entrance into a social club where nobody wants to socialize with them. I mean, next this stupid woman will probably be suing to brind her "significant other" and stick HER in the Does.

The ELKS Lodge which I have been a member of for 12 years now began admitting women about 6 years ago as full members. (hey, they let me in, requirements can't be too strict)
The first women admitted were wives of members who had been officers in the Womens Auxiliary know as "The Does".
The Does had their own rituals and procedures separate and apart from the ELKS. Since then, women had been admitted from outside the Does and have held the highest positions within the Lodge... FREE SPEECH - FREE ASSOCIATION - SECRET BALLOTS - What more can you ask for??

"Are you a guy?"
No, I'm a middle-aged female. Having a GUY in a San Francisco fabric store wait on you is probably no different than having a GAL wait on you.

Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't there all women organizations in the US that won't allow men to enter? I am sure there are several around. If this is the case what complaint does this person have? Since when does a private club have to comply with PC rules? Down with PC, up the republic.

She's too old to be an EAGLE Scout and then there's that 'gender' thing again.. OH, wait - that's not what you were talking about.. NEXT....

And you know there's bunch of guys 'round here that think they are really Lesbians... You mean I'm not a lesbian? But, but, I like women!(love them in fact) so I must be a lesbian trapped in a man's body!

Thanks for the info, I was't aware of that.
As a teenager I went to the local Elks Lodge with a friend.
It was a great place with very nice people.

Hey, the headline says woman....where is the pics of a woman? Very misleading.
The local chapter of Elks should pass a local exemption for
"Applicants of Ambiguous Gender", then mail this b-tchin' whiner
a membership card.
Along with an public apology for having initially denied
admission to an "IT".

*sigh* I hate it when women try to push there way into men's clubs. How many men do you see trying to get into the Red Hat Society? Men and women should be able to have separate clubs once in a while.

Our Elks club is the largest in California and we accept female applicants Enough said. If I'm a black 56 year old male who just got out of prison after serving a 30 year sentence for rape, sodomy, and murder, can I join a the Girl Scouts in CA?

so I must be a lesbian trapped in a man's body! Be careful with that. I knew a guy who thought that and has since had a sex change. Then, complains about gay marriage not being legal because he/she married a woman before he became a she. Oh. But, that's a whole other can of worms.
To: mass55th
Hey Einstein, why do you think a guy doesn't want a guy who works in a fabric store to...attend to his needs?
