Chapter only one in Central California with no female members
Merced resident Michele Arancibia applied for membership to the service organization in March, but was rejected following an April 6 vote. Arancibia and several Elks members say her gender is all that kept her out of the club, located at 1910 M St.
"I realize that there are a lot of old-timers out there," said the 55-year-old Arancibia. "But I didn't think it was still like this. It's sad, really."
The controversy over Arancibia's recent bid for membership began prior to the election when a current Elks member reportedly made phone calls to other members, urging them to attend the April 6 vote.
"I heard that a member had been calling around, asking other members to show up to vote against my joining," said Arancibia.
Several Elks members present at the April 6 meeting confirmed that a member stood up prior to the vote and pressed other members to deny Arancibia membership specifically because of her gender.
"There was a particular individual who stood up and urged members not to vote for females," said Merced resident John Burk, a 20-year member of the Elks.

She could start a "Cow Club" for cows like her.
All these Male Clubs should just adopt a charter that proclaims that any member may at any time ask another member to remove all clothing from the waist up.
....think that'd work?
(Not that it would help the male members in this case, but may stave off these idiots)
Funny, I know a woman here in Indy that's a member of the Elks club. Her dad was a grand poohbah or whatever at another chapter in another county.
I wouldn't say that Elks as a whole is all male. Perhaps just that chapter.
Are you a guy? Yes? Let's say you had to go buy a patch for your jeans in the fabric store; there are 3 clerks, and one of them is a GUY.
Do you want HIM to wait on you?
This happened to me 2 days ago. In San Francisco.
__________
I dunno. When I'm ready to pay for my merch, I really don't give a flying [fill in the blank] who waits on me. Do you really think about that kind of stuff?
ever heard of the lady elks?
She would be very welcome to join the clampers ... NOT
The Red Green Man's Prayer:
I am a man. I can change if I have to, I guess.
"Men have no business trying to apply at our private health club," said the 55-year-old Arancibia. "But it's for women only, and we don't admit men. Deal with it." [/READ WORLD]
The double standard no one will ever bring up. Why the hell not college bathrooms that are co-ed by stall, for God's sake? There are women's clubs for this woman...her only goal is "taking down" the men's only facility.
The Elks thing reminds me...I once heard Joe Buck broadcasting a St. Louis Cardinals baseball game. When his partner took a moment to recognize a large group of Elks who were there for the game, Joe said, "My father (Hall of Fame broadcaster Jack Buck) was an Elk - and a Lion, and a Moose, as well as a Buck. I used to charge the kids in the neighborhood a quarter just to come in the house and look at him asleep on the couch!"
....think that'd work?
Do you really want to see that?!
Let the men have their clubs. Why doesn't she have her husband join the Elks? She can be in the wives club.
What's wrong with letting men be men? I think we should stop women who try to be men.
she's just a trouble maker.>

Excellent approach from a real woman BarbM. It doesn't make these men any better than her, just different and they want to associate with others of the same. Men should also honor those "clubs" that only accept women.
It's not a good thing that men and women associate ALL the time, in EVERY activity.
Gay men are so NOT the fashion experts, though they certainly like the world to think that they are.
I'm sorry, but strutting around in pointy rattlesnake loafers,, jeans, and horn-rimmed glasses does not a fashion expert make.
Well, if you can discriminate on the basis of religion (atheists need not apply to the Elks) then you may as well discriminate on the basis of gender. As an earlier poster stated, it's a private club on private property. I'm not sure how a lack of belief in God impairs your ability to do community service activities, but hey, it's the right of free association....
I thought he was talking about brands of duck tape.
mc :-)
Combine freedom of speech with freedom of association and this can be one of the results.
And what if it really was just this one female that most members didn't want? Is that allowed, I wonder?
And you know there's bunch of guys 'round here that think they are really Lesbians...
They don't sell duct tape in S.F.?
You went into a fabric store to buy a patch for your jeans? Why?
