I love Real Men of Genius ads! The funniest would have to be Mr. Toilet Paper Dispenser Replacement Guy.

An in-law recently found a backpack of a highschool girl. She had an Ipod (I'm so out of it I don't know what that is) and a digital camera and her journal in the backpack. Well the inlaw looked at the pictures on the camera and they were of girls kissing in the school bathroom. The in-law also read the journal--I think that included some racy stuff as well. I was surprised because the inlaw was thinking about not returning the electronic items. Anyway, I told her she should return the items to the parent. Not sure if she did or not.

So all this girls gone wild/MTV/spring break/flash your boobs mentality gets instilled in young people. I know there are some male FReepers here that think this is a cool idea but I have thought for a long time and firmly believe that being fiscally conservative and morally conservative go hand in hand.

Our society is encouraging girls to be promiscous and wear skimpy clothing. It coarsens young people. Girls that
are promiscous at young ages often times don't trust men. Young girls engage in pre-marital sex with many partners and they get sexual transmitted diseases. They have abortions or they are single mothers. Single mothers don't usually do well financially. Therefore the child(ren) are going to be raised in less than optimal circumstances--no dad around. This will affect his future--his outlook on life. We pay for this breakdown in civility--it hits us in the pocketbook. It hits us through crime.

Mona's right. I like the real men of genius stuff but the one she quotes is just trashy and stupid.

I should have said something. They breezed right past me and I was so engrossed in what I was trying to accomplish ($300+ grocery trip and my mom waiting on me) that I didn't bother.

You might be able to find history DVDs or videos through your public library. Ours has all manner of DVDs and videos-- even new releases from the theater. We can go on-line, put in a hold request and go pick it up when it comes in...

soft-core pron

Spelling error.

It's "pr0n" (with a zero for an oh).

The only radio stations that play Real Men of Genius ads around here tend to be the rock stations that appeal to a slightly older crowd, and most of them will screen out the ones that push the edge of tastessness. The one she cites probably wouldn't have made the cut on the station I usually listen to.

I do from time to time...I've found I still prefer books. I actually read a study once on memory retention/learning. There was a comparison of comprehnsion and retention of information between an actual physical page which a subject was allowed to retain, reread and study for a given period of time, a physical page which the subject was permitted to read once, a monitor image of typed information which the reader was allowed to peruse, a monitor image which was presented for only one reading and a visual presentation with a soundtrack of the information being read.

While I guess the results seemed somewhat obvious to me, I was startled by the quantifiable degree by which the held and studied page blew the rest out of the water.

Great post. For the television I do want to see for escapist relaxation, it eventually comes out on DVD and I can just wait. That's how I viewed 24 and The Sopranos. I can't imagine organizing your life around when something airs. I suppose I could get a DVR - but then why let the "bucket or arsenic" in your home in the firstplace?

Mr. Fancy Coffee Shop Coffee Pourer was hysterical. Here is a list to listen to some of them.

Those ads are funny. I think the power that prudes have attained is more dangerous than a banana joke.

Good on ya! My brother went the same route, with the same results. (Does anyone else remember Harlan Ellison's collections of anti-TV essays from the '70s -- The Glass Teat and The Other Glass Teat? True then, even more so now.)

Any road, History Channel, TLC, Discovery, and Science Channel shows are routinely available on DVD, even when they've just aired for the first time. Check the channels' websites, which all have sales areas.

You could also sign up for their print catalogs, although from personal experience (not having a ten-bushel mailbox) this is a tack I don't recommend.

I can't believe Mona wrote an entire column without using the word "tendentious."

I'm at my wits end. My original plan is to usepublic outrage and boycott to bring pressure on the industr. But I'm afraid it would be too late.

My original idea, pressure through markets and public, doesn't seem, like it will help us on time. I really wish I had another one.
