Union officials at Peugeot-Citroen are to ask their French colleagues for "solidarity action" after the car giant's shock decision to shut its UK factory with the loss of 2,300 jobs.
Production at the Ryton plant in Coventry was suspended this morning as workers met with management to discuss plans for the factory over the next 12 months.
There were further meetings planned between shop stewards from the Amicus and Transport and General Workers Union to discuss the unions' response to the closure announcement - and the mood was said to be one of anger and defiance.
One union source said that the stewards will discuss plans for a ballot on industrial action which could cripple production of Peugeots 206 model. The official said: "The mood is one of anger and disgust at the way the company has done this and the fact that Ryton is being painted as the most expensive plant in Europe.
"We reject that argument out of hand because the company has made it the most expensive plant by sourcing all its parts from France. We have a verbal agreement with the French unions that any closure or attack on one plant is an attack against everyone and we will be seeking solidarity action."

Don't just riot for France...do it for the world.
We'll keep building these Poo-jouws even if nobody buys them.
This is a fairly normal thing in French companies. They grow overseas, but maintain a constant level in France. When things get tight, they can make job juts and plant closings overseas, but, by French law, no one can be laid off in France. I work for a French company in the U.S. and they've done that here, too. THey won't close any French operation, even though they are the most expensive and least efficient in the operation. They won't expand them, but the cuts come from overseas facilities.
Good luck to the Brits. I'm guessing the French won't "recall" having made such a verbal agreement.
LMAO, Last time I saw a POO JU on the road was 1985!!
