CBP Officers Find Three Migrants In Secret Compartment

Tecate, CA- U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the Tecate border station arrested a man Tuesday morning after he allegedly attempted to smuggle three undocumented migrants into the U.S. inside a hidden compartment of the vehicle he was driving, officials announced.

The migrants were discovered in a specially constructed gas tank compartment in the rear of the 1989 Ford utility truck. Firefighters from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CDF) and the Campo Fire Department were summoned to assist with freeing the migrants from the compartment.

CBP officers encountered the driver, an 18-year old U.S. citizen from Tecate, Mexico, when he entered the port at about 7:45 a.m. yesterday. The primary officer conducting routine border security inspections referred the vehicle and lone driver to the secondary lot for an in-depth investigation.

In the secondary area, CBP officers utilized a non-intrusive inspection device employing gamma-ray technology to produce a high-resolution image of the conveyance’s contents. The scan produced anomalies consistent with that of images of people.

CBP officers immediately called CDF firefighters for assistance in extracting the three undocumented Mexican nationals hidden in the compartment. Two females, ages 23 and 36, and a 13 year old male juvenile from Mexico were apprehended without incident.

The driver was arrested on federal charges of alien smuggling and was transported to the Metropolitan Correctional Center to await arraignment. The undocumented migrants will be paroled into the U.S. as material witnesses for prosecution. The California-plated truck was seized by CBP.

“Apprehensions like this would not be possible if not for vigilant CBP officers on the frontline protecting our nation everyday,” said Tecate Port Director, Mitchell Merriam. “CBP fulfills its primary mission of anti-terrorism while carrying out traditional border-related responsibilities, such as stemming the tide of undocumented migrants and illicit drugs and protecting the food supply and agriculture industry from pests and diseases.”

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) is the unified border agency within the Department of Homeland Security charged with the management, control, and protection of our Nation's borders at and between the official ports of entry. CBP is charged with keeping terrorists and terrorist weapons out of the country while enforcing hundreds of U.S. laws.
