Apr 18 2006 1:45PM Twelve U.S. adoption organizations might be banned in Russia

MOSCOW. April 18 (Interfax) - The Russian Prosecutor General's Office has demanded that several U.S. adoption organizations working in Russia be closed.

"Owing to failure to comply with accreditation terms, including the reporting on the living conditions of Russian children adopted by foreign citizens, we recommend early termination of the accreditation of foreign adoption organizations," Deputy Prosecutor General Sergei Fridinskyi said in a communication addressed to Education and Science Minister Andrei Fursenko.

Twelve U.S. adoption organizations are mentioned in the communication.

That's too bad: Russia doesn't have the resources to care for their orphans, but Putin's xenophobia makes him want to insure that nobody else cares for them either.

Well, I'm sure finding out girls you have allowed to be adopted by US citizens have been sexually abused for years and pictures of them traded around the world being abused had absolutely no bearing on it at all.......

Not defending the Russian orphanage system, but the adoption field is filled with unscrupulous money grubbers.

There are probably several hundred adoption organizations doing business in Russia, barring 12 is probably very much in bounds. There are a lot of countries that are a lot more restrictive in adoption than Russia.

What the Russian Prosecutor is actually saying is:

"These damn American agencies are starting to complain about the out-and-out corruption, bribery, and thievery associated with trying to adopt a Russian baby. This will shut them up. Screw the kids. The Russian Cleptocracy *will* get our cut."

Yeah that's why we have girls on 20/20 that were abused for 8 years after being adopted. It's all Russia's fault, not the fault of sick minded foreigners who use lax regulations to buy children for sex toys.

Doesn't change the fact that the Russian government uses foreign adoption as a license to steal.

That number sounds high.

Looks like fewer than 40 agencies accredited.

Ding, ding, ding!

"We have a winnah, give the man a Cupie Doll!"

This is not about the orphans it is about the blackmail, bribery, the "gifts," the theft and the "greasing" of palms and skids, that MUST take place if anyone from the "rich" West want to adopt; nothing more, nothing less.

Having lived and worked throughout the Ukraine and Russia since 1994 I have learned a lot about the adoption mills in this part of the world. Putting it mildly, Putin and Russia do not care about the orphans, they care about the CASH they generate and if you don't "play the game" and come up with the goods, then "no baby for you" ;o)

including the reporting on the living conditions of Russian children adopted by foreign citizens

Russia does have formalized post-adoption requirements for reports and photos. It isn't that burdensome. My guess is that the agencies in question weren't collecting and forwarding the required paperwork.

I am really dismayed at this news. As adoptive parents of two Russian orphaned girls (ages 9 mo and 11 mo at time of adopting them)I can attest to the semiannual reports of the children's health and well being. Our agency would contact us if we were even three to five days late in reporting. This was done up to age 4. That was three years ago, so maybe the agencies got lax and will now pay for there neglect. Amen.

I partially agree, again having adopted to infant girls from Russia, we were a continuous source of funding for everyone in the loop in Russia and the US. Just so you know the cost to adopt in Russia will run between $25,000 and $30,000 each child if you do it separately. that includes everything from air fair (up to two trips per occurrence) to paying for a body guard "interpreter". Amen.

According to the Russian embassy, there are 38 approved agencies. I don't know if that includes the ones being cut or not.

Here's a link. http://www.russianembassy.org/CONSULAT/adoption.htm

What??!?

If you're trying to say that I think what happened to those kids is ok, you can stop right there.

Here - let me clarify for you: What happened to those kids is inexcuseable and the people involved should roast in hell. That said, the Russian government has been and remains a criminal enterprise of the highest order.

Bless you for having the patience to go through that process. We just couldn't stomach any more heartache in the persuit of having kids.
