Immaturity has a lot to do with "being" gay. There are many people who simply never grow up because of bad experiences with a parent of the opposite sex - which they project onto anyone of the opposite sex. I have known women with abusive fathers who "became" lesbians beacuse they thought they were "avenging" their mothers.
And then there are other people, both male and female, who never seem to get out of the Peter Pan phase. Forever adolescent.
In any case, gay couples do look a lot alike. Of course, that's true with some older straight couples, too; they say people even pick out their dogs on the basis of some resemblance. However, two people who resemble each other and are of the same sex are going to look like near identical twins... Kinda creepy.

I live right in the middle of Boston so I see it all the time. Sometimes with bizarro-world twists: Over 6ft tall gay man with his roughly 4 1/2 ft boyfriend. Both dressed exactly the same, same glasses, same facial hair, same hairstyle. Two tall skinny gay men, each bald but with hair on the sides of their heads and gotees - one black man the other white.
I use a lot of newspaper for packing material at my business so the Sunday papers come in handy. Thats when I first noticed it after gay marriages were approved here in Massachusetts. The Sunday papers carry the wedding photos and brother, is it ever creepy to see the gay couples. It looks as if they are marrying a clone.
The women's college basketball championships were here in town and I saw so many lesbian couples it staggered the imagination ( even for Boston! ). Again, same thing - women dating lookalikes.
