Rush to judgment at Duke

'We don't know all the facts about the alleged Duke lacrosse rape, but . . ."

That's more or less how most commentators have introduced their remarks on the case that has reduced the Durham, N.C., community to prayers, tears and recriminations.

Let me interpret the code for you: Men are bad.

Even though we don't know what happened, we're not going to let the absence of facts interfere with our indictment of a team, a coach, a school, but more to the point -- of boys.

About the only thing to emerge with any clarity since a black exotic dancer claimed that three white lacrosse players raped her last month is our willingness to believe the worst about males.

That belief is all the more rewarding if the males happen to be white, as well as athletes, and especially if they're perceived to be privileged. If there's one thing we can't bear in this country, it's spoiled white boys who think the world owes them a good time.

snip

While we wait to hear what the grand jury decides, we might turn our harsh judgment inward and recognize that the anti-male groupthink that permitted a presumption of guilt in Durham is little different than the lynch-mob mentality that once channeled rage against blacks.

Obviously, no woman deserves to be raped for any reason, under any circumstances. But nor do men deserve to be presumed guilty just because they're men.

A technicality. The jury will not decide whether they are rapists or not.

It will decide whether there is sufficient evidence to prove their guilt beyond a reasonable doubt. An acquittal is not an assertion that the defendant did not commit the crime.

"The jury will not decide whether they are rapists or not."

Huh? When I see someone convicted of rape, I generally look at them as a raptist.

You have the right to believe that legal mumbo jumbo you posted above.

What is painfully obvious here (I live in the area) is that there was NO rape whatsoever. This black b**ch smeared these boys for a payoff, pure and simple.

Anyone with something resemblng a brain knows it, too.

Scew the city of Durham. It's full of "up yours, whitey!" types and this entire region is sick of 'em.

If I was the former coach of that lacrosse team, I'd be suing anyone and everyone in this mess till I OWNED them all. The whole sordid thing is nothing short of disgusting..........some petty little black hooker is believed over any and everyone else JUST because she's black.

Color me and most of the region disgusted.

It was no rape. The Duke Aholes were just too cheap to pay the agreed upon price to the whore and now they're getting their due.

"She's not being accused of doing anything unlawful involving the incident, they are."

Which is kind of ironic, don't you think? I would think that falsely reporting a rape would be "unlawful". The evidence actually supports the false rape more than it does an actual rape. Now, tell me why she has not been accused of doing anything unlawful, even though the evidence (that the public is aware of) leans that way.

What evidence? That presented by the defense?

The absoloute dumbest comment I have read on this issue. Congratulations.

You do realize there is not one stitch of evidence to support your idiotic claim.

"What evidence? That presented by the defense?"

Every bit of evidence that the public has been made aware of. No DNA on her or in her. No condom residue on her or in her. Bruises already present when she showed up, proven by time-stamped photos. Not a hint of her DNA in the place she claimed to have been raped. Her father learned of the allegations from the news, even though she had visited him since the alleged incident. Etcetera, etcetera.

Yeah... all the evidence that's been presented by the defense publicly so far.

What posts? Because I alone am willing to argue both sides rather than just say because she's a slut or whatever that she deserved to be raped, which is what most are saying on this thread.

I know it's almost impossible to believe, downright shocking, and contrary to everything activists have taught us, but, sometimes, even women lie.

Mara, there is no "defense" yet. No charges have been filed, yet. The DNA was done at the request of the local prosecutor, not the "defense", as you call it.

My impression is most people on this thread don't believe any rape ever happened.

You can't honestly look at all the evidence so far and not have doubts that a rape even took place. Everything she has claimed so far has been refuted.

And yet so many people are desperate to believe those boys did what they have been accused of by a drunken stripper.

Please. All statements that are being aired are those by the accused defense attys. Just because there are not yet any legal indictments yet filed doesn't make a bit of diff.

other than her allegation, there is precious little to establish that a rape even took place here. and even less to link any of the lacrosse players forensically to the alleged crime. lots of holes in her story, which, interestingly enough, continues to evolve. i think that is more what people are discussing rather than that she was drunk and deserved to be raped.
