Newt Gingrich: Immig Failure Could Hand Dems Congress
NewsMax ^ | 4/16/06 | NewsMax

Newt Gingrich, the architect of the 1994 GOP Revolution, is warning that Republicans in Congress better "get their act together" and pass tough new laws against illegal immigration - or the Democrats will win back the House and Senate in November.

Appearing on "Fox News Sunday," the former House Speaker scorched his successors for a lack of performance across a whole range of issues, but zeroed in on what he called "the debacle two weeks ago on immigration."

"The [Senate's] McCain-Kennedy bill and the compromise that followed is so far from what the average American wants," Gingrich said, "that it raises the danger of Republican [voters] staying home."

The one-time top Republican noted that in poll after poll, the public has demanded tougher border security and reforms like a voter ID card, saying it would be easy to put Democrats on the defensive on the illegal immigration issue.

"I'd be perfectly happy for the Senate Republicans to bring up a border control bill and have Hillary and Schumer try to stop it," Gingrich told Fox.

"Sometimes incumbents forget that we were sent here to reform Washington, we were not sent here to be co-opted by Washington," he added. "For Republicans to succeed in '06 and '08 we need real change."

"The question for Republicans in the next 90 days is: Are they going to become the party of real change?" Gingrich said. "Are they going to learn some lessons and get their act together?"

The unfortunate thing is, NO ONE is protecting our southern border, neither repub nor dem. What's a voter to do?
Of course I will vote my conscience. I've been doing that for quite a few years, without your help.

"Fox had one other statistic -- only one-third of the illegals are from Mexico, the other two-thirds are from other central and SA countries (plus some Arabs, that we also know)."

That contradicts other recent data shared, which was that 57% of illegal aliens are from mexico.

Yeah, I think that the one-third number is low, too. Don't have a ready source of reference so anyone else who does, jump in.

Hence, the reason I used "want-to-be revolution" as in when you wannabe right.

However, I don't think a revolution is possible. But, with the demonrats fueling their flames, a riot is possible with their sheer numbers willing to leave their jobs to demonstrate.

"They except contributions to their cause. :)"

Not except (which means to exclude), you mean accept (which means to be willing to include). FYI.

If the Dems win the Seanate in '06, would anyone notice the difference?

I couldn't agree with you more. The inability or unwillingness of our representatives to do their jobs is going to turn us into a third world country if we,the people, don't take a stand and soon!

Last night, listening to Fred Barnes try to spin this, I was livid; the media is trying, once again, to brainwash us into thinking we are all for legalizing 11 million people and nothing is being said about holding employers responsible.

If the 'Rats win the House and Senate, Bush will be impeached. They would never have the votes to remove him from office, but it would make it impossible for him to be effective in his final two years.

We need more teachers like you.

Maybe it would calm the spike in my BP whever someone starts a topic on the American -cough- educational system.

He has been spending a whole lot of time in both states. Was in New Hampshire, again, just last week and will be in Iowa this coming week. I've lost count of the number of visits he's made to both places, he just grins when asked if he plans to run -- says, instead, he is out trying to listen to the people and find out how they are thinking around the country.

Dubya's next Supreme Court nominees might notice a difference.

I saw that, he painted those opposed to the illegals as right wing extremists and that the moderate view would win out, which means he is for amnesty, IMHO.

Unfortunately, Mike, I think it's our representatives who are giving comfort to our enemies by doing their level best to undermine our way of life.

Newt is going the way of Buchanon.

I don't think so. The GOP handling of immigration WAS a debacle. They had a perfect chance to display some leadership and they just blew it, out of weaselness. The GOP has a chance to redeem themselves now but if they fumble and stumble again, then Gingrich's warning is likely to become a prophecy.

I hate to tell ya, but I'm currently not teaching and if we stay in S. FL I probably will not go back. But, thank you.

If you listen really close to Cavuto lately he is in favor of amnesty; the closer I listen the more he sounds like a Democrat. At time I think we assume everyone on FOX are conservatives, I think it's a mistake to believe that and it looks, to me, like the self-professed Independent (O'Reilly) is closer to a Rebublican than Cavuto is these days.

Clinton was impeached, and managed to take out Milosevic in his final two years.

Hey, you could run for office on that platform. - You got my vote.

As far as contributions to the National GOP, I've stopped for now. - If they vote in anything like the bill that they tried to shove on us last time, then every request for contributions will return them one Peso from me.

They can make up the difference by soliciting money from those immigrants whose interests they represent.
