Newt Gingrich, the architect of the 1994 GOP Revolution, is warning that Republicans in Congress better "get their act together" and pass tough new laws against illegal immigration - or the Democrats will win back the House and Senate in November.
Appearing on "Fox News Sunday," the former House Speaker scorched his successors for a lack of performance across a whole range of issues, but zeroed in on what he called "the debacle two weeks ago on immigration."
"The [Senate's] McCain-Kennedy bill and the compromise that followed is so far from what the average American wants," Gingrich said, "that it raises the danger of Republican [voters] staying home."
The one-time top Republican noted that in poll after poll, the public has demanded tougher border security and reforms like a voter ID card, saying it would be easy to put Democrats on the defensive on the illegal immigration issue.
"I'd be perfectly happy for the Senate Republicans to bring up a border control bill and have Hillary and Schumer try to stop it," Gingrich told Fox.
"Sometimes incumbents forget that we were sent here to reform Washington, we were not sent here to be co-opted by Washington," he added. "For Republicans to succeed in '06 and '08 we need real change."
"The question for Republicans in the next 90 days is: Are they going to become the party of real change?" Gingrich said. "Are they going to learn some lessons and get their act together?"
You said it, pal. Lifelong republican voter and donor here who will not vote for nor give one penny to the party ever again (the only exceptions being direct contributions to men like Tom Tancredo) if they do not fix this NOW.. and AMNESTY will not cut it. I am hardly the only one who feels this way, and if the party feels they do not need our support any further, then they can go ahead and continue on present course.
I doubt that the Republicans will lose the majority, and so must they. Else why would they be so irresponsible concerning this issue?
Right on, Newt. I hope he runs in 2008.
What was that book that Buchanon put out that we, including me, all laughed at and the press ridiculed him for? It turned out to be true in some regards as far as the Mexican's want-to-be revolution and retaking of the Southwest.
This isn't about what's good for America and its people. This is about what it takes to get re-elected. Can't you peasants figure that out? We just can't trust you with anything, can we?
If the Republicans do lose the majority in the House the Dems will use the tools of power (that the Republicans seem so inept at) to guarantee a Democrat majority for a very long time...further loosening of voter scrutiny at the polls, national mandate for felons voting rights, reimposition of the fairness doctrine to shut down conservative speech. This will be possible if the current Republican leadership in the Congress and the Administration continue to pursue policies that suppress the conservative base...these folks will never vote Democrat but they could well stay home.
I won't vote for a liberal, no matter what party they are from. I learned that lesson by voting for George W. Bush.
Yeah, I've noticed how the economy has sucked for 50 years.
I was there. Reagan was great, too. I still think that Newt was better at articulating the conservative agenda. Whenever I listened to Newt I came away thinking "There is no way to refute what he said."
He wasn't as smooth as Reagan but he stuck to his point and always had his facts at hand to back his words up. He still does.
It does. As to the '06 election remember we go to the polls less than 2 months after the 5 year anniversary of 9/11/01. This is political hay to be gathered.
Who said I was sitting it out? You're making alot of assumptions. I'm tired tho, of people trying to bully those of us who do not feel compelled to vote republican just because. I have always done it in the past, however I'm not convinced that there will be republicans I can support in the next election. And I'm not going to pull the lever for them if I don't think they should be in office.
susie
More hysteria. A few dozen hotheads talk about a Mexican revolution, and FR swallows it whole.
Have you really thought this issue through?
I have thought long and hard about that very question and the quagmire still remains. But, I have decided to vote Constitution party so that we may send a message we can't afford to send in 2008.
But first build the fence."
Who will you get to build the fence?
sounds a lot like Tancredo.
Good, let your conscience and wisdom be your guide as to who can better protect America. If that be a Democrat, Republican or any other candidate that you could reasonably expect to be elected.
This is no time for fits of pique over sideshow issues.
