Unless Tommy Thompson runs against Herb Kohl in Wisconsin, this is the GOP's best chance to pick up a Senate seat. I don't doubt that supporting a RINO like Kean tests a conservative's gag reflex. But the political situation in NJ is so bleak and the national stakes are so high that supporting him is the only logical option.

My Gawd, you got that right. If there was ever a hold your nose electoral moment, that has to be it.

I'd rather that NJ had a Republican of any kind rather than a 'RAT.

That undecided remains ludicrously high, perhaps a testament to the repulsive nature of both the leading candidates.

We're gonna need this, and Minnesota, and Santorum to hold, because any hopes I had of Harris pulling it out in FL have been dashed to bits.

I think Minnesota's seat is an even better shot for a pickup.

I believe Kean has an excellent shot.

Menendez is viewed by many as a sleazy Hudson County machine politician. Believe it or not, even many democrat voters are looking for an alternative to the corruption that has tarred New Jersey politics. If the Republicans hammer home Menendez' questionable past, they can win. If they sissy out and let Menendez skate around his past, then they are in trouble.

Another factor that may hurt Menendez is his unapolgetic embrace of illegal immigrants. That stands to hurt him with Union voters and with plenty of average New Jerseyan's who have just about had it with illegals and the problems associated with them.

Kean is no RINO.

He's an empty suit.

But for his famous name, he'd be running a donut shop in Union County.

Anyway, he's young and can learn on the job. And he's the GOP candidate so I'm voting for him!

It's too bad you can't clone Senator Cornyn, but keeping and expanding the majority is the most important thing.

If some of the more conservative NJ freepers on this board are any indication of New Jersey Republican voters, don't expect logic to prevail this fall.

I think you are right - and I'm really sensing a backlash against the in-your-face rallies by illegals.

I think Kennedy and Steele are at least of good as chances, but Kean does have a chance.

There sure are an awfully large number of undecideds in every poll in this race.

You're right, the undecided vote remains unusually high. Of course, Robert Menendez is an appointed incumbent, so the traditional rules of incumbency don't really apply.

Good point. Also, count Conrad Burns in Montana as damaging his own party's chances by insisting on running.

Steve Adubato opined on WABC radio the other morning that people in NJ are voting for Kean because they won't vote for an hispanic male.

The race baiting never ends. What a despicable comment and nothing could be further from the truth.

Exactly right. Elections are binary choices. Strong Conservatives (and liberals) should vote for the guy you dislike the least.

This is especially important in Senate elections as what the senator does effects national policy as much as it effects New Jersey.
