Neighbor arrested for murder; investigators temporarily rule out chatroom abductor

By Melissa A. Wabnitz

Transcript Staff Writer

PURCELL -- Just steps from her father's apartment on N. 8th St, investigators said they identified and apprehended Friday afternoon a 26-year-old man they believe is responsible for the kidnapping and subsequent murder of 10-year-old Jamie Rose Bolin.

Bolin was reported missing after she failed to return home Wednesday afternoon from a trip to the library.

A downstairs neighbor, Kevin Ray Underwood, is being held without bond in the McClain County Jail today and will be charged with one count of first degree murder Monday, said District Attorney Tim Kuykendall at a press conference late Friday night.

"In my 24 years as a prosecutor, I have never, ever been involved in a case that was quite as atrocious, heinous and as cruel as to what happened to this little girl," Kuykendall said. "We intend to seek the death penalty on this."

As of press time, officials were securing search warrants for Underwood's car and apartment, both sites which may yield even more charges, Kuykendall said.

Earlier in the investigation, it was believed Bolin was abducted by a possible Internet contact who drove a dark blue Tahoe. Friday night, Kuykendall said "as it turns out, the information is probably going to be unrelated (to Bolin's murder)."

Police apprehended Underwood at his apartment around 4 p.m. Friday after he began acting suspiciously at a police roadblock earlier that day.

The neighbor, said Bolin's aunt Linda Chiles, "pretty much kept to himself" and was relatively unknown to Bolin or her father, Curtis.

As of press time, Kim Carter of the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, said he was unable to determine how long Bolin was kept alive at the apartment before she was killed, nor were officials able to release any details related to the ongoing investigation.

"This is not like TV, it will not be wrapped up in a 60-second present," he said.

Jamie's uncle, Mark Chiles, still reeling from the news that his 10-year-old niece was kidnapped, likely held against her will and killed, said he warned parents everywhere to "hold onto their kids tight."

"This happened less than 10 feet of where (her father lived)," he said. "People need to know who their neighbors are."

Family members intend to set up an emergency fund at Bank of Oklahoma, Linda Chiles said. For more information, inquire at the Purcell Police Department, 527-4600.

The contrast today between my Easter day of uplifting thoughts and praise, then coming back to this topic (and other murder case updates today, of all days, on many I've been following, all at once) made me realize that even when I thought I was "steeled" against this, I'm not.

It turns my stomach, obviously - and not many things can "put me off my feed," believe me. Maybe the worst is out, until it's rehashed for trial. If I find any of it giving me some of my stress-induced asthma symptoms, then I'll have to back off - but for Jamie Rose Bolin, I'll try to get through and help her family find justice (as if LE need my or any others' help on this case!), if only through prayers.

Sorry you're having nightmares; it's quite understandable. On the positive side, "dream" sleep is good sleep!

I agree. Those who prey upon our children deserve death.

A public death.

I keep telling myself, "At least they caught this one before he could kill more." But it's still unnerving to think he was in our midst. I need to go get more bedding plants tomorrow morning--but I won't go to Purcell, I'll go to another town. It's irrational, I know, but...

Yeah, I'm afraid that the more notoriety and attention Jamie's case gets, the worse it will be for the town name. This is so far out of the ordinary (aacck, that's the word I first used for this guy, before we knew the rest of the story) that it will have some infamy.

Too bad he doesn't have some weird last name that would be the most memorable aspect of the case, instead of the small town (in beautiful horse country!) where it happened. Nobody remembers where Jeffrey Dahmer was from--at least, I don't.

Not sure where you live ("L" maybe?), but I bet you can find some nice plants going down towards PV, maybe? Or how about Stratford?

Also, silly question, but has Carl's Jr. bought out Hardee's? We don't have either one down here, at least not near me, so I didn't know. I liked Hardee's.
