KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - Afghan security forces backed by coalition helicopters attacked a suspected Taliban hideout in southern Afghanistan, setting off an intense gunbattle that killed 41 rebels, a provincial governor said Saturday.

Six Afghan police officers also died in Friday's fighting in Sangisar, a town 25 miles southwest of Kandahar, said Asadullah Khalid, the provincial governor.

"Acting on intelligence reports that Taliban have gathered in Sangisar to plan an attack in Kandahar, we launched this operation Friday and the fighting continued from morning to evening," he said.

Taliban forces have threatened to step up attacks against coalition and Afghan soldiers during the warmer spring and summer months. Coalition forces have been particularly disturbed by an increase in suicide attacks.

Sounds like they're getting intel from the locals, that's what it's going to take.

Good for them, some folks obviously realize what is at stake and don't wish to go back to the stone or stoning age.

It is spring time over there. They have been stuck in the mountains all winter with only goats and each other for uhmm...companionship. Now they are eager to get down into the villages and rape and pillage.

41 Taliban killed in firefight near Kandahar; Mountain Lion & the 3-block war

Afghan and Coalition forces have met the Taliban's much-heralded springtime offensive head on. "Acting on intelligence reports that Taliban have gathered in Sangisar to plan an attack in Kandahar, we launched this operation Friday and the fighting continued from morning to evening," said Asadullah Khalid, the provincial governor of Kandahar. Afghan security forces, backed by U.S. Apache gunships, launched a strike against the Taliban in the town of Sangisar, and killed 41 Taliban fighters and wounded several more. Six police were killed and nine were wounded in the strike. A Canadian unit responding to assist in the fighting was hit by an RPG attack, but no Canadian soldiers were injured.

In Uruzgan Province, a joint Afghan and Coalition mission broke up an al-Qaeda cell. The Afghans provided the ground forces, while the Coalition provided AC-130 gunships. "Elements of the 3rd Kandak [Battalion], 1st Brigade, of the ANA’s 205th Corps and Coalition members killed two insurgent fighters and detained two people who were responsible for recruiting suicide bombers to attack Afghan government officials and Coalition forces."

Definately not a fair fight.

I would be a bit carefull with that assumption. In both countries a lot simply depends on accurate HUMIT. And in both countries each day as required, haji are hunted down.
Do remember their are tens of thousands of Saddamist that would not go to A. They are old army guys and party officials, what simply have no future in a new Iraq and hate America to the nth degree.

Well heck bro. Can't argue with you on that one. I just got a strong feeling a lot less al Qaeda that entered into Iraq are not going to have an eady time making their way to Afghanistan. I believe that was what was brought up. Then again, in either case, we now are seeing a lot more suicide type attacks in A. Surely most partially sane Afghan rebels, Talaban types are not as crazy as the rabid ones that blow themselves up in Pali ville or Iraq. Hopefully the air/ground campaigns to be carried out from now to the snow falls again shall really decimate them this year.
After some five years in the country working with Afghans surely tells us we know have the country pretty well mapped out just where to go in and getem.
