Tehran, Iran, Apr. 14 A top Iranian cleric in Tehran publicly acknowledged on Friday that disciples of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the founder of the Islamic Republic of Iran, took American diplomats working in the United States embassy in Tehran hostage in November 1979.
When you [the Americans] sent Imam Khomeini to exile on November 4 [1963], you didnt think that disciples of the Imam would seize your embassy on the anniversary of that day and would take away your spies blindfolded, Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati, who heads the powerful Guardians Council, told worshippers during his Friday prayers sermon in the Iranian capital.
Islamist militants led by a firebrand Shiite cleric close to Ayatollah Khomeini stormed the American embassy in Tehran on November 4, 1979. Of the approximately 90 people inside the embassy, 52 remained in captivity for 444 days. Other senior Iranian officials have in the past acknowledged that the hostage-takers were acting in close coordination with Irans ruling clerics, but this was the first time a leading Iranian official acknowledged that the militants were disciples of Ayatollah Khomeini.
Jannati told the congregation that the United States was decaying and warned that Tehran was ready to face any aggression. He said the U.S would regret it if it launched any attack on the Islamic Republic.
The Islamic Republic of Iran is not weak, Jannati said. Relying on its young and creative forces and considering its military, technological, and scientific strength, Iran will not kneel before you.
Iran is not Iraq or Afghanistan. This is Iran; it has an Imam and leader. Someone like Ayatollah [Ali] Khamenei is leading the country, Jannati said.
The enemies must know that Iran is not comparable with any other country in the world, the powerful cleric, who is a close confidant of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, said.
The military might of Iran will determine security in the region. Irans neighbours will be covered by this security.
Jannati told Irans neighbours not to fear the theocratic states military after the Revolutionary Guards carried out week-long naval exercises in the Persian Gulf and the Sea of Oman.
Addressing the Iranian people, Jannati said that the West does not have the guts to carry out its threats over Irans nuclear program.
In comments directed at the United States, Jannati said, Look how weak and pathetic you are. You see today but you do not see tomorrow.
In other parts of his speech, Jannati blasted U.S. influence in Iraq.
Washingtons claim that democracy had been brought about in Iraq was a lie, Jannati said. America is attempting to prevent a pluralistic power take control in Iraq. It wants to impose a power dependent on itself.
You liars constantly speak of democracy but act in a different way, he said, addressing the American leadership.
*sniff, sniff....*
sounds like Iran is saying: "we got next " .
I seem to remember them shaking in their boots when Ronald Reagan was elected. W can also be tough when needed.
Zepplin I.
Uhm... all those young people with guns may not be an asset when they realize that we're serious about backing them up.
Wanna bet?
The satan servant is counting on it ... our attacking his bunkers is the only hope the 'revolution' has of surviving! This Islamic prick is in more danger from the young people he and his Islamic fanatics subjugate than he is from the U.S. or even Israel.
If Booosh hadn't become such a mealy-mouthed doubletalker like his mouthpiece Scottie-boy McClellan, they never would have gotten so frisky. I swear, I think our foreign policy has been taken away from Rummy, Condi, and Cheney and given over to Harriet Miers and Laura Bush.
(p.s. and I bet old Harriet is just dying to give us conservatives some payback for smacking her down last year.)
We probably will cave in to their demands! We need their oil too badly!
Perhaps it is time to give these Hitler wannabe's a little history lesson. During the cold war, the US was prepared to reach Def-con 1 status and launch thousands of nuclear warheads at the Soviet Union, knowing full well that we would experience 100's in exchange. That is 'guts'. Not only that, perhaps you need to be reminded that you are threatening the only country in World History that has ever actually used nuclear weapons in warfare. That is facts.
If it wasn't so serious it would be funny. He sounds like a play ground bully, calling "chicken" What's next? Momma taunts?
I think he is basically right: Dubya doesn't have the political support to do anything major on his arse. He knows it. That can change quickly, but for now, he is right.
ww111 as in the end of the world. That is what al-heck-ill-rim-a-jihaddist wants. He says it every frickin day. Maybe i deserve to get a dagger in my heart when i try to wave a peace sign to a terrorist.
I would very much like to think that President Bush is on this situation like a bird of prey over a Texas highway, and that he's muttering to himself "keep talking you Iranian sumb*tch", all the while getting ready to drop the hammer on those mullah-foolahs.
I would also like to believe in Santa Claus too.
