Hillary Clinton lends her fund-raising strength to Democratic Senate candidate Bob Casey Jr. today, hosting an event for him - in Chicago.
Despite their differences on a key issue - she favors abortion rights, he opposes them - Sen. Clinton (D., N.Y.) has emerged as a generous supporter. The former first lady and potential 2008 presidential candidate gave more money to Casey in 2005 than to any other candidate. Her political action committee, HILLPac, donated the maximum allowed by law, $10,000, records show.
The afternoon event at Chicago's Palmer House Hilton, Clinton's first for Casey, is a sign of Pennsylvania's importance in the Democratic Party's bid this year to gain control of the Senate. Casey holds a comfortable lead over Sen. Rick Santorum (R., Pa.) in the polls, but the senator has a 2-1 fund-raising edge over his leading challenger.
When asked why the campaign chose to do the event in Chicago, Casey spokesman Larry Smar said it was "nothing out of the ordinary." Clinton will be in Chicago today to deliver a speech at the Economic Club of Chicago.
"People in Chicago are concerned about the direction of the country," Smar said via e-mail. "People in Chicago like Bob Casey and don't like Rick Santorum. The race has national implications and a lot of campaigns raise money in Chicago."
Smar said he could not estimate how much money Casey would collect.
"While Rick Santorum is teaming up with folks like Rudy Giuliani and Bob Dole to help with his reelection, Bob Casey is depending on liberal friends like Hillary Clinton to raise money for him," said Virginia Davis, Santorum's spokeswoman. "We'll take that match-up any time."
The Senate race, expected to cost more than $40 million, has forced Casey and Santorum to seek money outside Pennsylvania, according to schedules released by their offices.
Santorum has visited at least a dozen states to raise money, while Casey has traveled to at least seven, their schedules show.

HEY ton butt....you host anything anywhere, BUT don't come inside this state to host NOTHING.....YOUR NOT WELCOME...
KEEP YOUR FLEAS OUT OF THIS STATE!!!

Someday - and that day may never come - I'll call upon you to do a service for me.

When is Santorium going to start emerging and make this a race. I am starting to get concerned.
The Toomey supporters wanted to prove to moderate Republicans that a coservative like Toomey could win because a conservative like Santorum won.
The right did not manage to end the career of Specter but they may very well have managed to end the career of Santorum.
The left is smart. They know they have to hide their leftism in order to win. The right believes that if they expose their conservatism moderates will vote for them. In a state like PA that is a prescription for defeat.
That sounds a bit like nonsense to me.
Back in the spring of 2004 when the right in PA was pushing TOOMEY and using Santorum as an example of conservative success, I predicted the result of that effort would be Specter relected and Santorum defeated. Lots of Freepers told me that was nonsence back then. They told me Santorum would be a shoe in for his reelectoin. With Santorum down double digits in the polls, you still think it is nonsense.
It is next to impossilbe for a known conservative to get elected in a moderate to left state like PA. It is even difficult in a moderate state like Ohio.
RINO Voinovich got 63 percent of the votes while Bush was barely getting 51. Bush campaigned hard in Ohio in 2004. Voinovich did not campaign hardly at all and got 63 percent of the votes.
DeWine is a RINO. RINOs and DINOs are what it takes to win in moderate states.
Letting anyone label a candidate a CONSERVATIVE is a death wish in a moderate state.
Liberals hide their liberalism and often win. Conservatives who promote their conservatism get defeated.
Santorum made a mistake actively campaigning for Specter and Toomey is showing his class for getting out there early and campaigning for Santorum. Casey is an empty suit and a stealth liberal which will become more apparent as time goes on.
If he is Catholic, Casey Jr will become a Pro Abortion Senator just like Kennedy, Dodd, Leahy, Murray, Mikulski, Biden, Durbin, Salazaar, Menedez, etc.......
Catholic Politicians are the leading Pro Abortion Advocates!
The way to beat Casey is to:
1) Constantly remind all the pro-abortion on demand liberal dems in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh that Casey is pro-life.
2) Run a true conservative campaign and encourage as many pro-life, pro-defense/national security, pro-gun ownership and Catholic voters to come out for Rick.
Does Hillary have no other interests other than politics and raising funds? I've never heard of any.
Santorum should have NEVER backed Spector......he went against his conscience for political reasons, and he's suffering because of it.
Pennsylvania GOPers know Specter would like Santorum replaced. Santorum did not appreciate the hard working people that put him where he is today. He moved to DC. I know plenty of people that worked for Santorum that will not lift a hand this time. Good luck Ricky.
So would you rather have Santorum, Casey or Specter as your next president (in the case Santorum or Casey, since sphincter isn't actually up for election. oooops! my prejudices are showing) ........or better yet, which one would you trust with your children.
......then pull the Senate voting trigger with that thought in mind.
Not at all - his support among Republican voters is only missing among the Specter pro-choice Republicans. Rasmussen ran a poll where he initially asked voters who they were going to vote for, then told them that both Casey and Santorum were pro-life, and Santorum was ahead slightly on the second ask by picking up GOP support - indicating his main problem is with the moderate/left Republicans (which make a significant portion of Northeastern Republicans).
"Toomey is running radio ads all over Pennsylvania in support of Santorum. In the last couple weeks the poll numbers have narrowed to single digits. I believe his ads are having an effect."
Class move by Toomey. A conservative would have to be suicidal to want to let Casey win this ... GO SANTORUM!
