I remember Coffin from the '60'd and his participation in campus Speak, Talk, Walk, Lie ins. He spouted liberal, non Christian, socialistic nonsense then and apparently continued it in his support for the undoing of the Anglican Church in the USA with his silly theological expositions on social justice, gay rights, pacifism et al. He will not be missed by people who want the Gospel of the Bible along with social justice expounded. He simply left out the Bible, Jesus and the personal need for salvation but allowed universalism, Marxism, and sanctuary movements to replace that need for a balanced Gospel.
Explanation #1: It gives them a moral warm fuzzy for standing up for "the oppressed," while in no way requiring them to sacrifice to obtain that smug superiority.
Explanation #2: Having already made their wad, they want to prevent others from competing with them by putting as many barriers as possible in their way.
Take your pick.
It's because they've experienced everything there is to experience. They think that being tied to a post in front of a firing squad will be the ultimate "Big O."
