But the fact is, if they hadn't hired a stripper, they wouldn't be in this mess.

And if the players hadn't picked Duke as their college then they wouldn't be in the mess either.

Furthermore, if the players hadn't gone to college at all then they wouldn't be in the mess either.

Really this can all be blamed on students in high school studying and getting good grades. See how ludicrous this can get?

I've dealt with "passed out" people before. They often can hear you, and will sometimes respond. Sometimes you can prod them into getting up, sometimes not.

From one of your links

Defense attorney Bill Thomas said earlier this week that Nifong's case is without merit, citing the DNA results and information that a second dancer at the party on the night in question is not backing up the rape allegation.
The DA only has the word of an "escort" against everyone else.

This is bizarre to the extreme. Was the "rape" complainant taken directly to the hospital after found in a parking lot by the cops? Was she allowed to go home for the night with her boyfriend?

Did she recover the memory of details of the 'rape' after she woke up the next morning?

They hired a non-union "stripper."

If they had "looked for the label," there would have been no mess.

Attempted implies they tried to bully their way and the team members advised the police to obtain a warrent.

Translation: The police knew they had no case, they tried to intimidate the college kids, they failed to intimidate THEREFORE now the police/DA will insinuate they were hiding something.

(vs the DA who is perplexed by this whole constitution and "rule of law" concept.)

There is no problem. She is asked to get out but lies down and passes out.

At some point about two weeks ago WRAL posted the fact that she had that unique run-in with the law including the date. Intrepid Freepers (not me) were able to find the offense in the NC crime database. That gave her name - Crystal Gail Mangum - and after than you have everything.

a post i found (at another site) about the alleged victim:

Lets see:

Father changed story three times
2nd stripper lied to police about whereabouts during first 911 call
They had a working cell phone, yet decided to wait 30 minutes, drive 2.5 miles to Kroger, past the police station, and have a security guard call 911 for them (again)
Accuser did not "recall" details until 31 hours after the fact
Police refused to polygraph suspects who wanted the test to prove their innocence
The accuser ((name deleted), don't ask me how I know that...) has a felony criminal record to included petty theft, grand theft auto, DWI @2X legal limit, and attempting to run over a police officer(intentionally) to avoid capture.
The accuser told News and Observer that "she was nervous, it was only her second strip", when her police record indicates she's been doing it since 2002.....

It was reported on the Abrams show at some early point that her boyfriend took her to the hospital.

I don't think police would release an impaired person to her boyfriend without having her checked by EMTs first. Otherwise, they could be liable if it turns out she needed medical care and didn't get it.

And hiring a stripper is cause for 48 people to have their lives ruined, right?

No -- but they wouldn't be in this mess in the first place, had they not hired the stripper. Actions have consequences that are sometimes far worse than one can reasonably expect. This is one of those cases.

This whole situation reminds me of the Scooter Libby farce for some reason.

Eh, it's not ludicrous. The old "lie down with dogs, wake up with fleas" argument is at work here. Based on the unraveling of the story, my sympathies are with the players. But their own poor decisions got them into this mess to begin with.

An update on the attempted dorm search: Two detectives spent over an hour in a residence hall attempting to question students. I believe Edens is where McFayden lived. The police didn't have search warrants, but the Duke PD was notified beforehand.
