In Mexico, 'nothing gringo on May 1'

"The Great American Boycott" is spreading south of the border, as activists call for Mexicans to boycott U.S. businesses on May 1.

The protest is timed to coincide with a May 1 boycott of work and shopping in the United States that also has been dubbed "A Day Without Immigrants." The boycott, which grew out of huge pro-migrant marches across the United States, is designed to pressure Congress to legalize millions of undocumented people.

Mexican unions, political and community groups, newspaper columnists and even some Mexican government offices have joined the call in recent days.

"Remember, nothing gringo on May 1," advises one of the many e-mails being circulated among Internet users in Mexico.

"On May 1, people shouldn't buy anything from the interminable list of American businesses in Mexico," reads another. "That means no Dunkin' Donuts, no McDonald's, Burger King, Starbucks, Sears, Krispy Kreme or Wal-Mart."

For some it's a way to express anti-U.S. sentiment, while others see it as part of a cross-border, Mexican-power lobby.

In some cases, advocates incorrectly identified firms as American -- Sears stores in Mexico, for example, have been owned by Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim since 1997.

And ironically, the protest targets the U.S. business community, which is one of the strongest supporters of legalization or guest-worker programs.

"At the end of the day, boycotting would only hurt corporations that are backing what people want done in the immigration bill," said Larry Rubin, CEO of the American Chamber of Commerce in Mexico. Rubin is encouraging people to write to their legislators instead of boycotting.

If they call me a gringo, I feel free to call them wet backs.

I'd like to call them long distance.

Works for me. I'd include being in where "gringos" are in that boycott.

"I've got an idea--what if we "Gringos" stopped visiting Mexican tourist traps like Acapulco and Cancun? And not just on May 1."

Not a bad idea at all. Hit them in their wallets... just like they do to American taxpayers.

"That means no Dunkin' Donuts, no McDonald's, Burger King, Krispy Kreme..."

From what I’ve seen of most of these protestors, I don’t think they can do it.”

I assure you that if gringos stopped patronizing Cancun and Acapulco, they would shrivel up into just another no-income Mexican town with nicer infrastructure.

Unfortunately, American spring breakers and vacationers will do no such activist thing; they will party on and only care about a good deal on airfare.

Not to mention that if we DID stop going there, the entire populations of Cancun and Acapulco would be crossing our border to look for work.

I hope he's not gonna try to put those bullets in that gun. If he does, I'd like to watch. From a distance.

"Remember, nothing gringo on May 1,"

I am in complete agreement with this boycott and as a show of solidarity I plan to boycott chicken during the entire month of May.

I love the irony of the illegals hurting their biggest supporters which are American businesses that give them jobs. I plan to join with them in this effort to punish American businesses that hire illegals.

We all just have to remember to shop on May 1st. Go grocery shopping or spring shopping or whatever on that day. I myself am going to stop purchasing things made in Mexico and I am going to tell the companies that do have plants down there this in emails. If the companies and rich of Mexico do not want to build the infrastructure or put money into the country down there and send there poor up here I am not going to help them any more. The May 5th great American Citizen walkout is a great thought but I have to work or no rent money.

Is "gringo" the equivalent to the words "spic, wetback, greaser" or is it a term of endearment?

Cool. I'll gladly accept their rejected gringo dollars. How much is one days worth of $60 billion/year?

"In Mexico, 'nothing gringo on May 1'"

OK...then nothing mexican the rest of the year.

I like mexican food, but I can get White American Cheese at the deli, mix it with milk and have the same cheese dip; the store sells chips, salsa, picante sauce, and taco shells. My wife makes a better quesedilla that most mexican restarants anyway

I say that, to say this, until they stop invading - YES IT'S AN INVASION, NOT IMMIGRATION - I will not frequent any mexican restaurants or other establishments, or buy mexican goods or labor.

Based on what (little) the Government is doing, there are only two choices...run them out or starve them out.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gringo

excerpt from wikipedia "gringo"

The Spanish etymologist Joan Corominas states that it was a variation of griego[1] ("Greek language"), the proverbial name for an unintelligible language (a usage found also in the Shakesperean "That's all Greek to me"). From the language, it was extended to people speaking foreign tongues and to their usual physical features.

A recurring fake etymology for the derivation of gringo states that it originated during the Mexican-American War of 1846-48. It has been claimed that Gringo comes from "green go" and used in reference to the American soldiers and the color of their uniforms. This is an example of an invented explanation, because gringo was used in Spanish long before the war and during the Mexican-American War, the US Army did not use green uniforms, but blue ones.

Yet another story, from Mexico, holds that Mexicans with knowledge of the English language used to write "greens go home" on street walls referring to the color of the uniforms of the invading army; subsequently, it became a common habitual action for the rest of the population to yell "green go" whenever US soldiers passed by.

Another legend maintains that one of two songs – either "Green Grow the Lilacs" or "Green Grow the Rushes, O" – was popular at the time, and that Mexicans heard the invading US troops singing "Green grow..." and contracted this into gringo.

Another version, heard in Brazil, refers to the United States Air Force base near Natal, Brazil during World War II. The American soldiers, wearing green uniforms, would be commanded "green, go!" by their sergeants during training.

The story of "Green Go" can also be heard in most other Latin American countries, with numerous variations. Some stories have the term originating as recently as the Vietnam war. Other stories attribute the term to other conflicts, all of which occurred too late in history to account for the earliest usages of the word.

Yet another version, also heard in Brazil, claims that when the British were building the railroads in Brazil in the beginning of the century, they would instruct the locals on how semaphores worked: Red, Stop. Green, Go. The British were thereafter known as "gringo".

Gee, if they can say no to "gringos" can we get away with saying no to "greasers"? Or, is it another case of the offensive one being able to get away with the slurs, while the targets of the offensive ones are facing double indemnity?
