Actually, the bear attacked a two year old boy in a swimming area, then followed and killed a seven year-old girl who had run away. It seems the bear was apparently in the mood to kill something.
People on this thread acting like bears only exist in the deep wilderness are mistaken. "Bear country" in East Tennessee include the cities of Gatlinburg, Pigeon Forge, and Sevierville, all well-developed tourist spots, hardly wilderness. While this attack was well south of there, many areas of Cherokee National Forest are easily accessable, complete with picnic areas, developed campgrounds, and swimming areas.
