Yes, Sharon Stone looks great (remarkable, actually, for a 49 year old star) but her breathy, melodramatic line readings and shameless mugging verge on self-parody.
This time, the glamorous crime novelist is implicated in a series of sexual murders in London, but to keep things confused the plot (never definitively resolved) suggests at least three alternate killers. The original BS (Basic Instinct) worked as a sleazy, guilty pleasure because Michael Douglass sympathetic police detective felt more than mere lust (with elements of protective love) for a strong, fascinating woman who might, conceivably, be wrongly accused. This time, the character looks decadent and disgusting from the get-go, and her male prey (David Morrissey as a psychiatrist) appears to want to kill her more than he wants to kiss her.
Morrissey is a disaster in this rolelooking like a poor mans Liam Neeson with a bad hair-piece and no handle at all on the character at the true center of the plot. Stone may have enjoyed her role as an insatiable sexual superwoman, but theres no fun at all in watching this dreary, slow-moving embarrassment.
Rated R (of course) for silly, crude sex scenes (and conversation) and sillier violence. ONE AND A HALF STARS. Thats a wrap. Im Michael Medved for Eye on Entertainment
Basic Instincts 1 was better. Michael Douglas character is more interesting than the guy in the sequel.
I had difficulty staying awake during the film. I had no such trouble when I first watched BASIC INSTINCTS ONE,back in my college days. My college showed it on a Friday night in an auditorium. I had to pay $2 to get in...
Who is Sharon Stone?
"...for silly, crude sex scenes..."
Hmmmm. Crude sex scenes I understand. But, "silly" sex? Someone fill me in here. Am I missing out on something?
If it was so bad, why did he give it 1.5 stars? What's wrong with zero stars? Is he afraid to hurt someone's feelings?
"Silly sex", would be sex with a clown.
Or on the back of a moving donkey.
Not sure if such a scene is in the movie or not.
Great movie. Perfect for the family. Be aware that it's fairly long (2.5 hours?) I just remember it ran past the kid's bedtime and our youngest nearly fell asleep.
Sheesh, I bought King Kong too, and already watched that one... I thought the animation and CG was very good. That was pretty long also.
I liked King Kong as well, MUCH better than the original.
I find it entertaining when people INSIST that the original is ALWAYS better...not having seen Basic Instict 2...but come on...I can barely think about the original movie without laughing because of the parody in one of the "Naked Gun" movies...:)
I highly recommend The Greatest Game Ever Played, a film for the entire family, which came out on video Tuesday.

"Who is Sharon Stone?"
My sons don't know either. They know Emme Rossum, Kirstan Dunst, Uma Thurman (who they think is getting a little old), but Sharon Stone is just an old lady.
Touted as someone special I think it great this movie tanked.
silly liberal bitch.
Thanks!
hey, he did say she was some decent eye candy.
maybe thats it.
I would make one change: the dinosaur stampede. I found a lot of it implausible.
Or between Bill Clinton and his wife.
