Fulton County GOP shuns DeWine (Bill Pierce for Senate!)
Toledo Blade ^ | March 30, 2006 | Jim Tankersley

For voters who did not recognize Bill Pierce when he dropped by Lucas County yesterday, here is a hint for future reference: He was the guy smiling big.

He is a Republican running for U.S. Senate, and his grin was understandable. The night before, he watched the Fulton County Republican Party stiff-arm his prime competitor, incumbent GOP Sen. Mike DeWine.

The county party could not decide whether to endorse Mr. Pierce or David Smith, another little-known candidate, but its decision to essentially rank Mr. DeWine third on the list "ought to send a significant warning blast across the bow of USS Mike DeWine," Mr. Pierce said.

Mr. Pierce fired several shots of his own in an hour-long interview. The high school and college math teacher from the Cincinnati area criticized Mr. DeWine over government spending, oil drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, a controversial deal on President Bush's judicial nominees, and the senator's commitment to Ohio and to conservative principles.

Voters see Mr. DeWine only when he is campaigning for re-election, Mr. Pierce said, and the senator "views the government coffers as being a great big bottomless pot of gold."

Mr. Pierce's platform includes shrinking the federal government and national debt, eliminating the Department of Education, and cutting federal regulations. His experience includes running his own engineering firm and battling the federal government over allegations the business violated labor laws. His name recognition and campaign funds pale to Mr. DeWine's.

CHAFEE must go!!!

Yeah, he is a big disappointment. I've got a couple in my state that I'd like to see gone too.

We should not make the same mistake and allow Mr. Bush, bless his loyal heart, to dictate who is acceptable, when we know they're not.

Toomey's loss and Specter's arrogance should be an object lesson in that.

I also understand that DeWine considers this his last term. If true, he is essentially free to defy everyone for 6 years with no fear of reprisal.

You can't get everything you want, so there's no point being a crybaby about it. There's always a "backlog" - - this is nothing new. We got the most "controversial" judges confirmed, including Janice Rogers Brown, Priscilla Owen, and Bill Pryor. Most importantly, we got two conservative Supes confirmed with only the typical Democrat smear attacks that they are obliged to go through in order to placate their scumbag "base". Big deal.

I am not aware of any candidates that weren't confirmed because of DeWine. If you were frothing at the mouth to "go nuclear", then you must be pretty sure Frist had the votes. (He probably did have the votes, but thanks to DeWine and the others who helped outmanuever the rats, we got the judges through without having to find out. If the effort to "go nuclear" was attempted and defeated, it would have been catastrophic.)
