Immigration Madness

There is only one group of people with less credibility on the immigration issue than Washington politicians. It is the illegal immigrants protesting violations of their "rights" while parading the Mexican flag and disrespecting the one symbolizing the great nation from which they're demanding favors.

I'm not talking about all demonstrators in every city in which a march occurred. Some were reportedly peaceful and even patriotic. But the hostility of some protestors did more to galvanize apathetic Americans into demanding action on immigration than all the previous alarm-warnings from politicians and pundits combined.

Nothing awakens the sleeping giant like direct threats to her sovereignty and security. And it was hard not to feel violated by the outrageous spectacle of people making demands on the very system they have circumvented instead of demonstrating some humility, if not contrition.

On the other hand, it's not hard to understand their attitude, given our shameful negligence concerning the integrity of our border and the rule of law. We hardly have clean hands either, considering our enforcement laxity and our Faustian bargain to reap the fruit of the poisonous tree by exploiting the cheap labor illegals provide. We don't even have enough respect for our laws to call violators "illegals," insisting on the euphemism undocumented workers.

And this is why specialization of labor is needed... because those people can;t be writing these papers and vise versa. I'm glad you've learned something today.

Right, I much prefer arguments about the economy to be made by high school dropouts to arguments made by people who've spent their entire lives studying it. If I need some top plate nailed, I'll call them, not George Borjas.

So does everyone else. We've covered this before: of an estimated 11-20 million illegal immigrants, 270,000 are in jail. That's 1.5-2 percent, not bad, in comparison. In 2000, there were 2 million incarcerated, a number that has surely risen since then, and that itself is about 1.5 percent of the population. Furthermore, in twelve states, between 10 and 15 percent of adult black men are incarceratedm in ten states, between 5 and 10 percent of black adults are incarcerated.

Why are you comparing 20,000,000 illegals and their rate of incrceration to adult blacks and their incarceration rate?

How many of the illegals are adult males? Use that figure to compare with adult black males

Compare apples with apples and oranges with oranges.

Your comparision is skewed.

I've made it clear enough that I believe in the free market and small government more than most in here apparently do.

"Free market" is a buzzword and spin if there is no equanimity between nations. Where is the equanimity between Mexico and the U.S.? Their immigration laws, written into their constitution, are very restrictive and strongly enforced and ours are weak and unenforced.

OK, now come the ad hominems: he doesn't agree with us, thus he must speak primarily Spanish, despite the many spelling-error-free, grammatically immaculate posts providing evidence to the contrary! Of course! And I didn't quote the "status" thing, I think that was you, or whomever I was responding to. If you're willing to quote the source, even if it was initially provided by someone else, you can't go back and claim that it's a bad source. Sorry. Is this somewhat better, since you can't do your own research? http://www.wnmu.org/nmcte/index.html

That's what devolve said the other day! The 'organizers' are providing them with those white shirts and U.S. flags.

Take a look at this if you want to see who and what the organizers are about.

The National Bureau of Economic Research. Is Not. A Think-Tank. Anyone with an ounce of intellectual honesty must be willing to consider both the costs and the benefits of immigration, and, after careful study, Dr. Borjas found that the benefits outweighed the costs.

"Technically - the "conservative" position would be NO LAWS against immigration at all - or at worst, Teddy Roosevelt's position that there should be "UNLIMITED" legal immigration."

Purposely misconstruing TR's take on immigration again, I see. (I was wondering how long it would take you to start spoouting that load of manure again).

TR's own words:

"We cannot have too much immigration of the right sort, and none whatsoever of the wrong sort."

"Every man of them should be required to serve a year with the colors, like our native-born youth, before being allowed to vote. Nothing would do more to make him feel an American among his fellow Americans, on an equality of rights, of duties, and of loyalty to the flag"

"We cannot afford to permit squalid overcrowding or the kind of living system which makes impossible the decencies and necessities of life. We cannot afford the low wage rates and the merely seasonal industries which mean the sacrifice of both individual and family life and morals to the industrial machinery."

TR also went on to define EXACTLY what the wrong sort of immigrant is (covers nearly all current illegal immigrants)...

"Paupers and assisted immigrants of all kinds should be kept out; so should every variety of Anarchists. And if Anarchists do come, they should be taught, as speedily as possible, that the first effort to put their principles into practice will result in them being shot down...."

"We must soon try to prevent too many laborers coming here and underselling our own workmen in the labor market..."

"Many working men look with distrust upon laws which really would help them; laws for the intelligent restriction of immigration, for instance."

And on, and on, and on... ad nauseum.

TR would not only have been soundly against amnesty, he'd have had those stupid enough to protest waving a foreign flag shot on sight.

Theodore Roosevelt was no fan of "UNLIMITED" immigration.

The 'conservative' position would be 'conservative' levels of smart legal immigration. The liberalization of our immigration law to suit La Raza types can hardly be considered conservative.

HONESTY... It does a body good.

She said "at least". As in "Greater than or equal to 1" Note that 1 is included there.

...."And when did the plight of the worker become the primary concern of the Republican Party?" .....

'I am not surprise you don't understand what Conservatives are concerned with...'

...Sounds like a big labor, protectionist, bleeding-heart liberal cause to me, is all.....

Sounds to me like you smoked yourself out.

wait, so I'm a troll because I fail to agree with you and I pointed out that Spanish is in fact an official language of New Mexico? If that link didn't work, here's this one.

www.wnmu.org/nmcte/index.html

You'd think that someone could disagree with the majority on an issue without being called a troll, but wait, that would require a desire for real discourse.

"I read it. It's a position paper. A "white paper", as it were."

Clearly you did not. The NBER holds working papers. It was the most readily available link, so I used it, although it was just an abstract. Here's the whole thing, from the Journal of Economic Literature, not, I might add, a "pro-immigrant journal" or a journal of opinion pieces.
