WASHINGTON - President Bush accused Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid on Thursday of "single-handedly thwarting" action on immigration legislation, and got a brisk retort in return.
"President Bush has as much credibility on immigration as he does on Iraq and national security," shot back the Nevada Democrat.
The exchange was the latest in a series of maneuvers among party leaders trying to assign blame for Senate gridlock over comprehensive immigration legislation. A pending measure would strengthen border security, create a guest worker program and offer eventual citizenship to many of the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in the country. advertisement
Supporters claim the bill has more than enough votes to pass. It was sidetracked last week when Reid insisted on a procedure for voting on politically charged amendments that Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., rejected.
Bush and Reid swapped charges as Republicans disclosed a Spanish-language radio advertising campaign designed to shoulder Democrats with the responsibility for legislation passed by the GOP-controlled House that would make illegal immigrants subject to felony charges.
The ads are scheduled to air in New Mexico, Arizona and Nevada - states with large Hispanic populations.

SECURE OUR BORDERS FIRST!!!
Well if its between these two on National Security, i'll take the President any day.
President Bush just doesn't get it does he. Harry Reid is for amnesty just like the President is. It's the conservative core of his own party that's against him.
I am from Nevada and I wish we would vote Dingy Harry out..since he became the top DemoDog he has taken a very left turn....I met him once and he seemed quite dull.
Break it up you two . . you're both pretty.
A pox on both their houses.
then he is saying Bush has a LOT of credibility on immigration. Bush should respond that he takes this as a compliment based on the successes of the former Iraq war and the WOT.
Blame? I salute them for gridlock. Otherwise we would have a terrible bill signed into law without the debate we're having now.
Why are they fighting? They're on the same side.
Yes well, while we are all glad to kill the Senate bill, in the meantime there is no border tightening and millions more are coming in.
Wow, that will solve the problem, can you insult Bush`s dog too?
Dad...is that you?
Why dig his heels in on the very issue he is most WRONG?
Exactly. You'd think the President would realize it, and that it would give him pause.
Unbelievable! W, you are really making it difficult for me. Rather than lowering yourself to playing patty-cake with losers like Reid, put troops and friggin fence on the border, THEN come back and play politics!
Harriet Myers ring a bell? Bush is apparently insulated from any opinion other than the wrong one.
I thought Reid was done, out, gonna q2uit after the lobby scandal
