DETROIT (AP) Federal authorities arrested four businessmen who allegedly arranged to illegally buy hundreds of handguns, machine guns, air-to-air missiles and aviation radar equipment for export to Indonesia.
"We consider this to be a serious and grave threat to our national security," U.S. Attorney Stephen Murphy III of Detroit said Tuesday in announcing the arrests.
All four men were charged with conspiring to violate the U.S. Arms Export Control Act, which is punishable by up to 5 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Court papers did not indicate reasons for the purchase or what the men intended to do with the weapons.
The four were arrested Sunday after meeting in Hawaii with people they thought were representing a Detroit-area company, which authorities say the men believed would provide the military hardware. It was to be shipped to Indonesia through Singapore.
The suspects were identified as Hadianto Djoko Djuliarso, 41, of Indonesia; Ibrahim Bin Amran, 46, of Singapore; and Ignatius Ferdinandus Soeharli and David Beecroft, whose ages and nationalities were not disclosed. <a href="http://oascentral.newstimeslive.com/RealMedia/ads/click_lx.ads/www.dnt.com/news/national/articles/790904516/Middle/Ottaway/DNT_825005-2_M_ROS-BReynolds/DNT_825005-2_M_ROS-BReynolds.html/34323966623564653434336537313430?http://www.barbarareynoldslaw.com"><IMG SRC="http://a248.e.akamai.net/7/800/14845/1137600989/oasc04.247realmedia.com/RealMedia/ads/Creatives/Ottaway/DNT_825005-2_M_ROS-BReynolds/" WIDTH=300 HEIGHT=250 BORDER=0></a>
An indictment in Detroit identified Djuliarso and Amran as owners of four businesses located in or doing business in Indonesia and Singapore. Soeharli financed the purchases and Beecroft attended the meeting in Hawaii to arrange shipment of the items, according to court papers.
Djuliarso and Amran also were charged with violating export law and money laundering.

That is it? That really seems like a slap on the wrist!
"NASHVILLE, Tenn. --A software glitch knocked out computerized X-ray machines at Nashville International Airport for five hours Friday, causing long lines and flight delays while officials searched bags by hand.
None of the Smiths Heimann X-ray detectors at the Nashville airport's two screening checkpoints was operating when security operations were scheduled to open for the day at 3:30 a.m., said David Beecroft, who oversees security operations at the airport for the Transportation Security Administration.

sorry about the HTML that appeared in the post... maybe mod can delete it
The point is that "David Beecroft" appears in the post and in my March 31 excerpt (post 2).
That is very interesting.

Excerpt:
The Michigan indictment alleges a conspiracy involving an employee of a company owned by Djuliarso and Amran sending an e-mail in March last year to an unnamed company based in the United States seeking to purchase military aircraft parts for export to Indonesia.
At the time, Indonesia was under a U.S. embargo that prohibited exporting those items to that country, the indictment said.
In July last year, Amran also sent a message to the company asking for quotes for aircraft armaments that included 245 Sidewinder missiles and 5,000 rounds of strafing ammunition.
Djuliarso and Amran owned businesses that included Ataru Indonesia, which was identified as the company purchasing the items, according to the indictment. The two traveled to Michigan last year to meet representatives of a U.S. company, the indictment said
lol! Beat me. :)
LOL, great minds you know ;)
Yes! In my searches this morning, I saw several articles that named two, not four, conspirators -- all leaving out David Beecroft. Mistake?

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - U.S. airports were warned about possible screening equipment problems Friday after a software glitch knocked out the computerized X-ray machines at Nashville International Airport for five hours.``The situation has reverberated across the nation,'' said David Beecroft, who oversees security operations at the airport for the federal Transportation Security Administration.
All international airports in the country were alerted because the company that supplies the computer software for the Smiths Heimann X-ray detectors at Nashville also serves several other airports, Beecroft said.
Geez! This isn't good. Not at all. The only thing I can think of as to the discrepancies in the reports (some naming him and some not)is if he was working undercover with the gov't. Otherwise...
Interesting. Makes you wonder.
Something to be said for security de-centralization.
ping - follow up to your post naming the possible Singapore recipient?
All four of these guys are probably big hillary contributors.

When he's not setting up illegal trade deals he is soap opera star.

who uses his saxophone career as an elaborate cover for his nefarious weapons trafficking business.
