I know it sounds weird, but with a pair of Bose QC2 noise cancelling headphones, the little iPod can be quite an escape.
(BTW, I don't own any Bose stock) :-)

I actually usually end up watching more than the kids do. They'll watch for a little while, then run off and do something else and leave the grownups sitting there. But don't dare turn it off, cuz they'll be back the minute they don't hear it in the background.

LOL! That's why I asked. The Little Mermaid and Lion King were big when my niece was little. When she spent the night we had to have one or the other on at bedtime. She'd fall asleep, I'd turn it off, but we always had to start at the beginning. To this day I have never sat down and watched either all the way through. Same with books. Never try to skip a page.....they know!
