The Libertarian Party Washington has nominated Western Washington University instructor Bruce Guthrie to run against U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash. Guthrie, 42, a candidate for Congress in 2004, teaches marketing at the university in Bellingham. He also teaches ice speed skating. He can be reached at 360-647-5372 and spdsk8@aol.com.
Party members also voted to get rid of its $25 annual membership fee to make it more accessible to voters, said Travis Wright, the partys executive director. The partys convention, which was held in Bremerton this past weekend, also delegated the power to nominate congressional candidates to its executive board, Wright said.
The U.S. Senate race is the only statewide race on the ballot this fall, which means Guthrie must receive at least 5 percent of the total votes in that race for the Libertarians to be restored to major party status, like the Democrats and Republicans. Libertarians are now considered a minor party because none of its candidates for statewide office in 2004 achieved the 5 percent threshold.
when he sets up a campaign website ill post it here
libertarian ping
Refresh my memory, is Cantwell the Liberal Dem Senator who is only in office because a Libertarian candidate named Jeff Jared managed to siphon off enough votes to throw her the election over Slade Gorton? Or am I thinking of someone else?
New title: Libertarians plot with Democrats to siphon votes away from Cantwell's challenger.
Babble you are right. Liberterians are the Ralph Nader's of the GOP. I agree with them economically but they ruin us politically. They made Steve Largent lose in Oklahoma also for Governor.
Well, Jared didn't siphon quite enough votes away, so Cantwell's people "had to take care of things."
how about "Libertarians Nominate Candidate to help ensure Cantwell Wins Again". No, yours is better.
Cantwell needs to go. She has never responded to one single email I send her office. At least Patty (Osama Mama) Murray responds, even if she disagrees.
In fact, both need to go. I'd rather a Conservative Republican, but am leary seeing the conduct of the current RINOs in D.C.
You are correct.
I believe there was also a Losertarian on the ballot in '04 when Dino Rossi "lost" the Governor's election to Christine Gregoire.
i dont recall a libertarian running in the 2000 race ill go look it up on google and get back to you
My suggestion for the Libertarian Party (and like you, I am a small-l libertarian on economic issues) has been that they should not nominate their own candidates, but should try to have an influence on politics by offering their endorsement to whichever of the real candidates works hardest to please them. That way they could have a real influence, and help the side they agree with more rather than hurting. (So far they have not gotten back to me on that.)
Irrelevant.
No matter what lable Mr. Jared ran under, a sufficient number of Slade Gorton's base was not satisfied with him. Those people expressed that dissatisfaction. Case closed.
If Gorton's supporters want to cry about it, they should perhaps address their concerns to Mr. Gorton.
6 More Years! 6 More Years!
GO CANTWELL!!
Give me a "C", etc.
Dear babble-on,
That's not a bad idea.
The Libertarians could do things like they do in New York, where the minor parties often endorse the major party candidates.
That way, folks who really agree with Libertarian political positions could vote for a major party candidate, thus not wasting a vote. Yet, the vote for the major party candidate through the Libertarian ballot line would permit Libertarians and their sympathizers to show the strength of the Libertarian vote.
Thus, instead of getting 1% or 2% of the hardcore Libertarian vote, while the larger number of Libertarian-leaning folks decide not to waste their vote, the Libertarian ticket might score 5% or more, showing that this part of the electorate, although not large enough to win lots of elections on its own, is nonetheless a key coalition player.

Also, Libertarians generally have the foreign policy of George McGovern.
The message I sent, unfortunately, is that I was stupid. Never again.
And the libertarian bashing begins.
It appearsthere were 3 people runnig besiudes the repub and dem a write in libertarian and a independent candidate
Jeff Jared (L)
OTHER CANDIDATES WHO RAN
Gordon Beeman (L)
Kevin Lawrence McKeigue (I)
Yes, buying in to one of the major big government parties is sure winning them influence in New York. I mean, geez, look how non-statist that particular region is. Looks like that strategy is working great. /s
LIBERALtarians rushing to the aid of their sister in trouble. They will make sure she gets reelected. Way to go!
To the guy who keeps posting the Reagan quote about how wonderful LIBERALtarians are, skip it please!
He was after all a Democrat at one time too. So what! Does anyone, not in a mental hospital, think Reagan would support a LIBERALtarian over a Republican?
THEY ARE DANCING ANF LAUGHING AT THE dnc TONIGHT!
