US opens bids for border control initiative
The Washington Times ^ | 4/12/2006 | Jerry Seper

The Department of Homeland Security took a major step yesterday in seeking to control 6,000 miles of the nation's borders, calling for bids that eventually could bring upgraded sensor and surveillance technology, unmanned aerial vehicles and computers.

In addition to 1,500 new U.S. Border Patrol agents this year and another 1,500 next year, the effort could include advanced video cameras with high-resolution images, infrared viewing and night vision; heat and motion detectors; biological and chemical detectors; ground radar; and facial-recognition software technologies.

With Republicans and Democrats in Congress deadlocked on immigration reform, Homeland Security officials yesterday began the bid process to hire a prime contractor to work with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to develop a border security program in five years.

Note, they are developing a viritual fence, which in reality is no fence. Whenever the heat is off they will abandon it as too expensive to continue the illegal immigration.

What a joke. The BP can barley train 1,000 a year and with attrition, that 1,000 turns into approximately 750.

Without boots on the ground, sensors and unmanned aircraft are rendered useless.

Just build a friggin fence -- it's not that hard. Why do these empty skirts in congress fail to understand the sentiment of average americans? Stop the illegal immigration now and deal with the illegals in the US at some later point.

Amen to your comments.

Still no actual fence. This is truly immoral.

Do not re-elect anyone who is currently in office. We have seen just how eunuchs build fences and protect American citizens!

The need to check with WalMart; Home Depot and Lowe's for security fencing and hire the subs through them.

They'd get a great price and a very good deal but unfortunately, that's not what they are really looking for is it?

What they are looking for are some expensive "engineering studies" a lot of posturing, then stating, it's really unworkable and unaffordable and besides the public really doesn't like the idea!

The department of virtual homeland security needs to start pickling up virtual paychecks.

Their motto...

"We can't protect the border but we'll keep an eye on your daughter"

The great thing about a fence or a wall is that you can always take it down if you no longer need it.

hahahahahahahahahah!!!!!
I get it. That way they can actually watch them as they cross. That way they will have an actual count of how many new illegals we get a year, so when they do the next amnesty in 20 years they will know exactly how many they are talking about.
hahahahahahahahahaha!!!!!!

amazing. we can staff and mine the border of the ROK to protect them ,but not our own damn border.

I'd settle for a Panmunjam style mine field.

Cool!

Will they actually be connected to anything, or will they just be there for the illegals to steal to get some dinero for use in they're newly adopted homeland?

Better yet -- round up the illegals at these rallies, ship them to the border -- half on the west coast; half on the east coast. Make them build the fence -- west to east and east to west. When it meets in the middle, escort all of them through the opening, close up the opening and VOILA! you have a fence from sea to shining sea. (Simplistic, I know -- but it is an idea!)

A virtual fence can only work in areas in which the border is not close to populated areas. These are very useful tools than can allow the border patrol to detect and track illegal border crossers, however if the border crossers can get into populated areas before the border patrol agents can arrive to detain them, a virtual fence just can't be very effective.

These tools are a great idea when used in combination with good double and tripple fencing in populated areas that extends well beyond those populated areas.

These tools also allow the border patrol to detect people who are trying to breach the fence and react more quickly.

This is a good idea as long as it's in combination with fencing where fencing is needed.

We need to keep pushing Congress to build and expand fencing.

>>>...bring upgraded sensor and surveillance technology, unmanned aerial vehicles and computers. <<<

I have read that Customs and Border Protection has some 270 cameras on the Canadian border in Washington State and 25% have never worked and another 60% are sporadically of-line due to failure and or sabatoage.

Build a damn wall Congress - it works. The one in san diego works. The one in the West Bank works. Build a wall.
