BOSTON -- Jailed "Survivor" winner Richard Hatch has been segregated from other inmates in the Massachusetts prison where he is being held.
Hatch won $1 million in the debut season of the CBS reality television series.
He was found guilty in January of failing to pay taxes on his winnings and other income.
Hatch's lawyer said his client asked to be put in protective custody shortly after he arrived at the Plymouth jail.
He was taken into custody immediately after his conviction because the judge said he posed a flight risk.
Hatch will be sentenced on April 25 and faces up to 13 years in prison.
Prison officials say the reality TV star was placed in protective custody because he's a celebrity.
Any prisoner can make such a request.
I bet the rest of the inmates are just as glad when they have to take their showers too, I think him being a flaming queer has more to do with it than anything else.
I bet his dance card will be full.
Too bad he's not a Mexican illegal invader. He could have gotten off with a fine.
Hard to believe CBS didn't withhold taxes, everyone else seems to do that (lotteries, escrow companies, etc.).
I am surprised they did not with hold taxes from his paycheck.
Sounds like this is the ultimate Survivor contest?
So much for not having debtor prisions...
I wonder if he wanders around prison naked, like he did on the show.
All creditors are equal. The government is just vastly more equal than the others.
oh, I'm a survivor and I'm ok
they put me in my cell today
I'll do my time and eat my lunch
I'll go to the lavatree
on wednesdays I'll take my shower
with Bill and Paul and Steve
I haven't been following the case, but a 13-year sentence seems way out of line for the likely tax liability involved...was the IRS just trying to make an example out of a celebrity, or did Hatch piss off somebody he shouldn't have?
Not paying taxes on a million dollars is different if it all belongs to one person. A million illegals not paying taxes is OK though.
Well, he might try it once...just once.
Anybody know if he's expected to get the full 13?
when this first started rolling CBS put out a press announcement that they treat all Survivor contestants as contractors, that means they pay them the full ammount and fill out a 1099 for it then paying the taxes are left entirely to the contractors.
It's hard to believe that Richard Hatch did not notice that taxes weren't withheld when he saw "Pay $1,000,000.00" on the check.
Presenting a $1,000,000 check on the Early Show was better than presenting him with one for $580,000.
Kinda loses its PR value rapidly.
Actually, he also took "tax free" money from a charity he set up and some radio appearance payments.
