Canadian Cops Nab 5 in Deaths of 8 Bikers

By BETH DUFF-BROWN and ROB GILLIES,/ Associated Press Writers

Canadian police arrested five people on murder charges Monday and said that eight men found stuffed inside vehicles on a farm over the weekend were affiliated with a biker gang.

Police called the killings "an internal cleansing" of the Bandidos motorcycle gang and said that the eight victims suffered gunshot wounds. Their bodies were found Saturday on a farm in Shedden, Ontario, about 90 miles northeast of Detroit.

Police on Monday searched a modest, two-story farmhouse owned by a gang member near the site where the eight men were found dead, stuffed inside abandoned vehicles in one of Canada's biggest mass murders in a decade.

Police set up a roadblock around the farmhouse, about six miles from where the bodies were found in four vehicles deserted in a farmer's field Saturday morning.

The gangland-style killings are the biggest mass murder in Canada since spurned husband Mark Chahal went on a shooting rampage in Vernon, British Columbia, killing nine people, including his estranged wife and himself in 1996.

Toronto-based organized crime expert Antonio Nicaso told The Associated Press that he learned from a reliable source that three members of the Bandidos have been missing since Friday. He said there were 12 members in the group.

Nicaso said the Bandidos were not that big or influential in Canada, but they are the major competitor of the Hells Angels motorcycle gang in the United States.

"If it is confirmed that the eight bodies were all members of the Bandidos you could say that someone decided to erase the Bandidos from the biker map," Nicaso said.

He said all messages of condolences had been taken off the Bandidos Web site, leading him to speculate that the murders may have been an inside job by club members.

The eight victims knew each other and were all from the Toronto area, police have said.

The rural area where the bodies were found has had problems with motorcycle gangs in the past, but is generally considered low-crime compared with other parts of Canada, in particular Quebec, where biker violence is more common.

"This is how they deal with disputes. They don't go to court. They don't print snotty lawyers' letters. This is what happens," law enforcement consultant Chris Mathers told the AP.

"It is shocking for it to happen all at one time," Mathers said. "The fact that they were all killed at one time is significant. ... It certainly sends a message."

Mathers, a former undercover Royal Canadian Police officer who now runs a consulting firm in Toronto, said the Bandidos and the Hells Angels have absorbed other biker groups in Canada over the year and he doubted there would be retaliation.

"It's probably hard to retaliate when most of your membership has been decimated," Mathers said.

Police found the bodies after a call from the property owner, who police said they did not consider a suspect. Mary and Russell Steele told Global News that the vehicles were not there when they took the road home the night before.

They said they called police Saturday morning after looking inside one of the vehicles and not being able to see anything because of a blanket covering the back window.

They're are a major competitor to the Hells Angels in the U.S. Obviously not in Canada. (especially now that 3/4 have been terminated)

I don't know this for a fact but I've been told that if you are from the States and go up the Alcan highway to Alaska to hunt, they will seal your guns in some kind of seal at the border and you can't unseal them until you enter Alaska.

I hadn't heard that before.
Perhaps it's to prevent hunting by those who haven't purchased a Canadian hunting license.

Found this on a quick search...

"Hunting and sporting guns are allowed in provided they are going to be used for sport, or for competition. You may need to provide proof of this, such as a permit from a Canadian firearms registrar. Hunters are permitted 200 rounds of ammunition before fees are imposed, and competitors are allowed 1500 rounds. All weapons MUST be declared at the border. Failure to do so will result in confiscation of the weapon and criminal charges being brought up. A Firearms Declaration can be bought for $50 and will be good for one year.
~snip~
If you are taking hunting guns to Canada, be CERTAIN that you fill out the US Customs form 4457 with description of gun (cameras, Etc.)& serial numbers and present to US guys before leaving US (so they will have record that you took them out & didn't purchase in Canada). Also have a Canadian Firearms Declaration all filled out when entering Canada to save time & this will serve as your gun license while hunting & to buy ammo if needed." link

Here's another source...
Firearms are divided into 3 categories-prohibited, restricted and long guns. The only category of gun a U.S. visitor may bring into Canada is a long gun, which is a regular hunting rifle or shotgun with a barrel at least 181/2 inches/47 cm, and an overall length of 26 inches/66 cm, and which does not fall into the category of a prohibited or restricted firearm. Non-restricted firearms may be imported only for sporting or hunting use while in Canada, for use in competitions, for in-transit movement through Canada or for a person's protection against wildlife in remote regions of Canada (excluding national parks) as long as the customs officer is satisfied that the circumstances warrant the importation of the firearm. Restricted weapons may only be imported for the purpose of attending an approved shooting competition in Canada. A temporary permit to carry is required. Nonresidents arriving at a Canada customs port must declare all their firearms, including long guns. Anyone who illegally carries a firearm into Canada is subject to a number of penalties, including seizure of the weapon and the vehicle in which it is carried. It is against the law for visitors to bring handguns into Canada. Personal protection devices such as stun-guns, mace or pepper spray are also prohibited.

"I just never thought of Canada having motorcycle gangs".

OK, then think about Australia, Holland, Denmark, Germany, ad nauseum.

Sounds like a Mom giving her opinion of a bad boy.

Doesn't sound like someone who's ridden among "Clubs" wearing colors. They can be scary AND cowards at the same time. If the "cowards" are willing to intimidate, rob, and assault you, for their entertainment, and they are armed and you are not, THAT'S SCARY!!!!!

"Accountant" my butt!!!
If he was wearing the club's colors, he had been initiated in one of the most dangerous MC Gangs in the U.S.
I don't care what his day job was.
You don't get the "privilage" of wearing their colors by buying a round of beer!

I'm not saying that gangs are pussy cats. Far from it. I'm just saying they're stupid immoral cowards and deserve to be institutionalized...or executed as the case warrants.
