This is probably going to be my only comment about this whole demonstration situation. I've seen a lot of what's going on, on TV - kind of amazed that my own city didn't have the 500,000 person turnout, that our Big D neighbor to the north did - but what I don't *get* is that all these illegal immigrants are interviewed and always say they pay taxes. How do they do that? How can someone be living here illegally and yet pay taxes? Why doesn't the IRS report them to the INS? How hard is that?

Most of all, I don't understand what part of "illegal" these people don't understand. I can't park in a handicap parking space without getting a ticket or getting towed (I guess, I never have done it); can't get medical services without paying for them; can't go to a hospital without paying for it; can't get any kind of assistance from the government when I need it, after 30 years of paying my taxes and being a law-abiding responsible citizen, yet people who don't even have the right to live here *get* all these things and more. Why?

And why does the media insist on trotting out "immigrants" without pointing out the HUGE difference between "illegal" and "legal"? Why are they saying "we" are all *against* immigration?

Yeah, yeah, I know *why* but I had to ask it out loud. It seems to me that the whole country has gone insane if they pay any attention to any of this at all. The only way it affects me is that I'm even more afraid to leave my home than I was before. I've been accosted by these jerks at every turn - and yet, all anyone ever says is, "oh, you know, Latino men are 'just affectionate.' " That's not what I call it.

I guess I'm done. Just call "illegal" what it is - "against the law" and arrest everyone who is breaking the law; deport those who shouldn't be here. Period. End of story. I can't believe there is even any discussion about this, much less all this "show of power."

You know what started me on this topic? Talking to two LEGAL immigrants at my job who are extremely enraged at this crap going on.

"An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) is a tax processing number issued by the Internal Revenue Service. It is a nine-digit number that always begins with the number 9 and has a 7 or 8 in the fourth digit, example 9XX-7X-XXXX.
IRS issues ITINs to individuals who are required to have a U.S. taxpayer identification number but who do not have, and are not eligible to obtain a Social Security Number (SSN) from the Social Security Administration (SSA).
ITINs are issued regardless of immigration status because both resident and nonresident aliens may have U.S. tax return and payment responsibilities under the Internal Revenue Code."

"If you determine that an individual is not eligible for an SSN, provide him/her with a written explanation as to why an SSN cannot be assigned (RM 00204.330). Show the reason as “needing an SSN for tax purposes is not a valid nonwork reason for assigning an SSN.”

Provide an individual not eligible for an SSN with IRS Form W-7, Application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number, and refer him/her to IRS to apply for an ITIN. If the FO does not stock the form or if there are questions about obtaining an ITIN, advise the individual to contact the local IRS office. (NOTE: The form is also available on the IRS website at www.irs.gov.)"

All of this money being collected by the IRS, even the FICA, is going into funds that our esteemed congresscritters want to raid. The people paying the tax and FICA believe that they are doing the "legal" thing. See for yourself by following the links.
