Peaceful protest pleases chief
At a police security briefing that ended about 3:15 p.m., Dallas police Chief David Kunkle reported that no one had been arrested and no noteworthy offenses had been committed amid the crowd that was widely estimated at 100,000.
Speculation put the crowd at up to 500,000, although police had no comment on that number.
Its been a very good day for the city, Chief Kunkle said. This is a family-oriented group thats come here to demonstrate. No one we saw looked like they were planning to cause any problems.
Chief Kunkle attributed the peaceful nature of the protest to the work of the volunteers and organizers, as well as police efforts to marginalize the small groups of counterprotesters.
Even Im surprised about the nature of the crowd. I think the people have been educated to ignore the other protesters, he said.
Chief Kunkle reiterated his estimate that 550 police and 200 sheriffs officers were on duty. Although no additional backups were called Sunday, supervisors were asking early shift officers to stay a few hours later, and calling the evening shift workers to arrive early.
Police work around the city would not be affected, he said.
Some counterprotesters retreat
Police told counterprotesters that they could protect them only to a point, and offered to escort them out through an underground parking lot. Six people left with police who were carrying shields and wearing helmets and shin pads.
Miles Walters, 16, a sophomore at Richardson High School, said he was scared when people started throwing water bottles and hunkered under a building for protection. I wasnt expecting it to be this bad, he said. Because we take pride in our country they hate us and call us racist.

That is the important observation, and question. The reason that we have so many different visa classifications is primarily from a misguided government attempt to react to market demands for labor. Quotas have been modified annually, and the bribery and corruption at USCIS has barely been exposed. The question about how many we can afford is easy. If one views immigrants as a human asset, we can afford approximately 200,000 per quarter as long as the economy is growing at 3-4%. If one views immigrants as a human liability, fire up your buses and line up the porta-potties. Unemployment will stabilize at 7-9% if you deport 200,000 (working age) per quarter. In 13 and 3/4 years (the year 2020) you will have accomplished your deportation of 11 million, and underemployed roughly 20 million Americans. Feel free to tweak my numbers and come up with a better scenario.
Here's a suggestion: learn to read. My comment was serious.
Is the idea of spending time in a Mount Kisco court, to see firsthand the illegal alien problem in your own region, funny to you?

Is Mexico still a nation?
The Monitor's View
A survey released last week by the Pew Hispanic Center found more than four in 10 Mexicans are willing to leave their country to live in the US. One in five would risk a dangerous, illegal border crossing. Most surprising, one in three college graduates wants to flee. Before Washington takes up immigration reform this fall, it needs to take a hard look at Mexico's disillusionment.
Already, one in eight adults born in Mexico now lives in the US. And the Mexican economy is kept afloat partially by an estimated $16 billion sent back by immigrants to relatives.
This wide push to leave is probably now as strong as the pull of higher wages, social advancement, and family connections in the US. And yet, Mexican leaders remain in denial about this propensity for mass exodus.
All this spells trouble for proposals by President Bush and some in Congress to set up a temporary worker program as a way to reduce the burden of illegal migration. The Mexican demand for such US "guest" visas could be, by some estimates, half a million a year. Yet the numbers in the proposals fall far short of that. The US could hardly absorb such a large wave of humanity without further challenges to its civic stability.
In other words, a guest-worker plan is a false promise of ending the waves of illegal border crossings.
Ok..first they fly mexican flags and you gripe. Now theyre flying american flags and you gripe. What kind of flag would they have to bear to please you?
Somebody better start planning some infrastructure. Building roads, houses, fire departments, power substations, communications, schools, and such. I see a way to make a bunch of money off of a mass influx of people. Oh, wait a minute. These are not Irish, German, or Italian people with no money. These are Mexicans and central Americans with no money. Nevermind. Scrape up a colonia, put a democrat in charge, and send the sick and dead ones back to Mexico. Great plan there.
Who keeps getting zotted?
70 million is what we'll have in about 5 years at current rates. That should make you and the rest of the OBL traitors very pleased.
Americans weren't allowed to be there. Only the foreign law breakers. Dallas stinks.
Yeah...can't have hispanics living in Texas. Someone should've told my ancestors that back when they settled in the mid 1700s and helped fight for statehood.......
If amnesty passes there will be at least 30 million cockroaches who will come out of the woodwork to sign up for their benefits. In Reagan's regretable amnesty, three times as many showed up as was expected, and the situation certainly has not improved since the '80s.
Jesus entrusted His Church to Peter. That is the Catholic Church, which can be historically traced to Peter.
You never once mentioned whether or not you had any relationship with Jesus, at all.
Without that, it doesn't matter what church you attend.
BTW, there is plenty of Bible literacy in the Catholic Church. That you weren't exposed to it is the fault of some in the Church.
Mount Kisco is in New York. I've never lived (and would never live) in New York in my life.
That's not true. The local news interviewed quite a few American citizens there, not all of them Hispanic.
You failed to catch the point. Texas was not even close to 35% Hispanics 10 years ago. And those weren't all kids that they had, either.
It's not Hispanics per se but the rate of increase in Hispanics. It just goes to show how quickly Texas is being overrun by people who have no respect for the law--something Texas isn't exactly known for tolerating.
Here is a few.

Latinos protest against immigration reform bill
Beatriz Maya, an organizer with the Farm Labor Organizing Committee (FLOC) said If we need the labor of immigrants, then we need to treat them with dignity and respect. Proposals such as AgJobs related to migrant farm workers and the McCain-Kennedy proposal for Comprehensive Reform will address the need for immigrant workers and for homeland security while providing a path to legal residency and securing labor rights for immigrants who are here making a contribution.
Maya added, Using immigrants as disposable workers, criminalizing their children, and building more walls with our good neighbor Mexico does not sound like a policy that comes from a democratic and humane society. ____________________________________________
