Jean and I are praying for her full recovery and both of you are on our prayer list here at Trinity. It's wonderful what the Great Physician can do.

4/18 PM Update:

More progress. LibreOuMort's pain issue appears to be resolved. The hospital is working very closely with her on dietary issues too, including losing some of the weight the steroids put on her -- and she is visibly losing weight and looking and sounding better, healthier and happier than she has for a long time.

Attitude is UP, UP, UP.

They've taken away the oxycontin(?), leaving her on Percocet (sp?) and Valium as necessary for the remaining pains.

She's been given a number of exercises to build strength where needed and (I infer from an earlier conversation about more advanced cases of GBS) to re-program the nervous system to bypass anything that might have been lost.

She can gad about in a wheelchair, though there's not much company outside of staff; she's one of about four patients in the unit (this is a Good Thing). There are lots of empty rooms.

More foot motion to report. Not much improvement in the "drop-foot" right foot from yesterday, but the left has regained a lot of capability.

She's also able to rise by herself from wheelchair to walker and walk around a little, though the drop-foot is still a bit of a problem. She's been fitted with an orthotic that will allow her to walk. (I will let her tell the story of the people she's known before and met again in this process.)

Her goal is still to come home Saturday, or maybe Sunday. I think it possible.

Oh, dear!! It's so stupid to say "wonderful news" when there's been so much difficulty...but, oh, well..."wonderful news!"

Much love and support!

4/20 PM Update:

(Not sure what happened to yesterday...)

Much more progress. The digestive tract issues are gone -- slight overshoot yesterday from constipation to the opposite, but now things are in good order. Pain is down too, with just Percocet (I think).

She now has a program of exercises to build upper body strength, which she'll be relying on to get about as her recovery proceeds. She's also able to get up from an armchair chair to her walker, and can walk about -- though slowly and carefully. A leg brace that holds the right foot in position will help that considerably and make her rather more mobile.

She's making arrangements for a few small alterations to the bathroom that will allow her to use it more readily and safely, in light of her back surgery and the GBS. Those will probably be made Sunday by a handyman friend (I will be away on business).

She visits the other patients in the unit. One woman had overrun her cellphone minutes, so LoM offered hers to keep the contacts going. But as a result the woman changed her (terrible) plan and now has more time.

Tomorrow she has more walking practice and stair-climbing also. The latter is necessary for her to come home. The plan is on for her to come home Saturday, though she does not have a discharge time set yet. She is definitely looking forward to coming home.

Good news, tell her to hang in there with all the re-habilitation exercises. They are worth it.

Continuing to pray down here in Oregon.

9/21 PM Update:

The enemy's attacks have been terrible today. A blow-up with a friend of some 20 years over the phone, ended just before I walked into the room (she says I have a calming influence on here; all that influence was needed this evening); a device she needs and had ordered arrived at the hospital this morning but never got delivered, the crutches a friend had rented turned out to be too big and the outfit didn't have smaller, and a very hectic day for her in therapy ...

But she is coming home tomorrow. We have a session at 11 AM to go over the "stairs protocol", so I will be able help her up the stairs to the living floor. After that, I believe, she will be discharged.

As yet she is not allowed to walk without a helper present, and we will have to get an armchair or two that she can sit in... but she will be home.

And if she needs to go out, we'll have a wheelchair and a 6-month handicapped placard for the car, which I picked up today.

It was only a week and a half ago we heard the prognosis: "two days at current level, two weeks' decline, two weeks to recover to current situation, long period of recovery following." The only part of that that has borne out so far was "two days at current level" -- it's been UP ever since!

We're also prepared for "long period of recovery." We canceled our trip as parish delegates to our diocese's annual conference week after next (the bishop will be disappointed, I know), but we're making plans to fly to CA in a few months to be there when our daughter gets her bachelor's degree... the day of our wedding anniversary.

Thank you all for your prayers!

I am glad. When my brother had GB, he was in intensive care 6 weeks, almost died from pneumonia 2 times, and the paralysis rose so high they thought they were going to have to tape his eyes closed, but it stopped. He was on life support, because for awhile he couldn't breath unassisted.

But in the end, it reversed, and all he had when he got out of rehab was a little neuropathy in his feet which did get better with time.

Amazing.

Thank you for the additional story! The worst I've heard is of a man who (4 years ago) his brothers checked up on after not hearing from him in several days. They found him in the bathroom, paralyzed and approaching the point where he could breathe no longer... but with treatment he has recovered and is living a normal life again.
