Navy Designates Next-Generation Zumwalt Class Destroyer(DDX/DDG1000)

WASHINGTON (NNS) -- The Navy has announced April 7 that the first DD(X) destroyer will be designated DDG 1000. As the lead ship in the class, it will also be named in honor of former Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. Elmo R. “Bud” Zumwalt, Jr.

Developed under the DD(X) destroyer program, Zumwalt is the lead ship in a class of next-generation, multimission surface combatants tailored for land attack and littoral dominance, with capabilities designed to defeat current and projected threats as well as improve battle force defense. Compared to current U.S. Navy destroyers, the Zumwalt-class destroyer will triple both current naval surface fire coverage, as well as capability against anti-ship cruise missiles. It has a 50-fold radar cross section reduction compared to current destroyers, improves strike group defense 10-fold and has 10 times the operating area in shallow water regions against mines. The Zumwalt class fills an immediate and critical naval warfare gap, meeting validated Marine Corps fire support requirements.

Last year, Congress fully supported the DD(X) budget request, and the Zumwalt class is ready to start construction. In November 2005, the Department of Defense granted Milestone B approval, authorizing entrance into Phase IV of the program, including the detail design and construction of the two lead ships.

I don't think the first is commissioned until 2012. That's being awfully patient with Iran.

It kinda reminds me of a hybrid of the Expedition Everest roller-coaster in Walt Disney World's Animal Kingdom and the Civil War Union USS Monitor ironclad vessel.

I imagine that's some "Speshul" paint. Might not be so easy after all.

I think this is a duplicate thread. The other one had a lot of posts about Zumwalt himself.

Already Noted. At $7 billion+ per ship it is already too expensive to be built in any numbers. The Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) is all we can afford, and not many of those.

The Navy doesnt need many of those for them to have an impact.

If we can afford a billion for a plane, B-2. I am pretty sure, we can afford 7 billion for a ship. If it is a good naval weapons platform, appropriations will be made for it.

Looks like a nice "boat." But why name it after Zumwalt? Far as I'm concerned, he screwed up the Navy.

They should have named it after the skipper of the Pueblo whom they hung out to dry instead of supporting him with immediate air power.

"Deck Apes" won't be allowed to touch that baby with all the radar absorbant materials on it. You will need college edgumacated 'Exterior Maintenance Specialists' from various Contract Maintenance Companies.

I only see one gun, how can this ship meet Marine requirement for fire support with only one gun? Most likely only a 5 inch gun at that.

The proposals vary from one to two guns. They are 155 mm and will have advanced powder and shells to allow them to very accurately hit targets about 100 miles inland with more rapid fire than todays weapons.

155 mm with 100 mile range? Hmmmm, did not think that was possible. I have heard of rocket assisted artillery shells, but for those to be accurate guidance (expensive) is needed.
