An off-duty Chicago police officer shot and killed two men who aimed guns at him early Friday, shortly after the officer had helped throw one of the men out of a bar at closing time, according to law enforcement officials. Police officials said the officer was justified in shooting the two men after they pulled up to his black Hummer and both pointed handguns at him. Kenneth Elrod, 31, of the 5400 block of West Carmen Avenue, was drinking at the bar near Belmont and Central Avenues early Friday when the staff asked him to leave, law enforcement sources said. The off-duty officer, a seven-year veteran, was a patron in the bar and helped the staff get Elrod to leave, a source said. Elrod's wife later told detectives her husband called home and told her he was coming to retrieve a gun because someone at the bar had made him angry, sources said. Elrod's white Ford Ranger pulled up next to the Hummer and two men in the pickup aimed guns at the officer, Bond said. The officer pulled his gun and opened fire, hitting Elrod and the passenger in the truck, Demetri Centera, 31, of the 4700 block of North Kenneth Avenue. Both men died at the scene. Neither man in the pickup fired a shot, police said. Police said they recovered two handguns, a .38-caliber revolver and a .25-caliber semiautomatic, from the cab of the truck. Police said both dead men were known members of the Latin Eagles gang and one had extensive gang tattoos. Both had numerous arrests, and Elrod had a 1994 felony conviction for drug dealing. He was sentenced to 2 years in prison. Centera also had a 1994 drug conviction, for which he received a year of probation.

Question: How can a policeman afford to drive a Hummer?
I don't see any question about justification here officer or not. From the description of the targets I think that it's a shame they didn't have a full load of friends for the officer to shoot.
Nice thing about Darwin Awards: you don't have to be present to win.
Any kin to the Elrod/Axelrod clan of Chicago fame?
Leni
It's nice to hear some good news involving a cop shooting.
Mighty wimpy "pieces" for such a couple of "bad dudes". I think I'd be embarrassed to have only a .25 (which I don't, I tend to like big bullets when I'm depending on them to save my equally large posterior).
The world now has two less miscreants to deal with, thanks to the actions of this off-duty officer, whom I salute.
He's a "Chicago" copper....
My first thought too. Especially a Chicago cop whose only a seven year veteran. Chicago Patrolmen make squat. Unless he had a 'rich' relative pass away his bank could be getting a visit from Internal Investigations on how he can afford a Hummer.
In my time I've known many Chicago cops, from the Beat Cop to a Homicide Detecive and none could afford any fancy car. One cop friend could only afford a chopped Harley Sportster as his 'toy'. And he-we fixed that with used parts.
Maybe he is single and up to his eye balls in debt.
Lots of overtime and a second job.
used H2s can be had for a little under $30K
Methinks a cop owning a Hummer is the real story here.
Lucky day at the local police auction of confiscated "drug" vehichles?
Or maybe he's married and wife makes more money than he does! :P
My first thoughts exactly. In our town,we can tell the good cops from the bad.The good cops usually have two jobs to support the family unless the wife works.
I hate it when I get hit in the truck. Is that a flesh wound?
