If the Republicans were doing the right thing on Immigration, a lot of blacks would consider a political switch. But that's a big If.
And what is the "right thing" on immigration? A quick/dirty attempt to placate their base? Or a long-term, coordinated effort to create a situation where an almost exclusively Democratic constituency and a heavily Dem-leaning constituency politically turn on each other ... putting the Dems in a rock vs. hard spot situation that helps ensure conservative control of the federal government for the next generation?
As much as I believe in and support the whole "illegal means illegal ... what part of that didn't you understand?" argument, I do think that there is something much larger and more important at work in what Bush is doing on immigration right now.
