NEWARK, N.J. -- The men both stood in a busy hardware store parking lot, but their lives were far apart.
On one end, Oscar Bautista of El Salvador said he had been waiting more than three hours for a job. Across the lot, Art Jackson loaded potting soil into his Dodge Durango. He complained that immigrants are making it harder for Americans to keep good jobs, especially blacks.
''You need to take care of home first,'' said Jackson, an African-American phone salesman from northern New Jersey.
Blacks and Latinos are often united on social and political issues. But they often differ when it comes to immigration.
Newcomers make black progress harder, said Wesley Crawford, who works at Source of Knowledge, a bookstore in Newark. ''It's a misconception that they're taking jobs we don't want. If you give people a good job, they will work.''
While Hispanic immigrants have protested a proposed crackdown on illegal immigration, the nation's most prominent black leaders have all been to New Orleans to try to stop the upcoming local election. Shortly after the storm, Jesse Jackson and others complained that Latino workers seemed to have more access than blacks to rebuilding jobs.
Bruce S. Gordon, president of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, said that African-American and Latino bonds are strong and that his ''spirit was there'' at the immigration marches.
Most of the immigration protests have focused on a bill passed by the U.S. House that would make illegal immigration a felony, and all but one black voting member of Congress, Rep. Harold Ford Jr. of Tennessee, was against it, according to the Congressional Black Caucus.
Still, many blacks feel threatened, said Earl Ofari Hutchinson, a black writer in Los Angeles.
''The civil rights leaders say we're all united, but the average person on the street is taking great offense at this group coming in and essentially taking over,'' he said.
"The civil rights leaders say we're all united"
They're bought off. I suspect many union leaders too.
Now if only the Congessional Black Caucus would awaken
That's because there was work to be done. Latinos show up for work. Too many N.O. blacks just want to be cared for, they don't want to work for it.
Personally, I wouldn't mind Hispanics moving in around here and taking over at the local fast food restaurants. It's been a long time since fast food restaurants have lived up to their name.
Uh-huh Jesse. The latinos were willing to work, especially at the generous disaster rates provided by Fema sub-contractors. The blacks ... where were they Jesse? Where were they?
Dont hear much from the all to well known race baiters.Guess there is no money in it for them.
No longer the majority minority. :-)
"That's called "painting with a broad brush"."
It's true that I often paint with a brush suitable for driveway sealing, but in this case I consider the ghetto/project" set to define "black culture". The culture of middle and higher class blacks is very different and much closer to typical American culture.
(Denny Crane: "I Don't Want To Socialize With A Pinko Liberal Democrat Commie. Say What You Like About Republicans. We Stick To Our Convictions. Even When We Know We're Dead Wrong.")
...
This immigrant competition has hit black Americans especially hard. A recent New York Times report pointed out, "In 2000, 65 percent of black male high school dropouts in their 20s were jobless that is, unable to find work, not seeking it or incarcerated. By 2004, the share had grown to 72 percent, compared with 34 percent of white and 19 percent of Hispanic dropouts."
Nobody ever "gave" me a job.
Cubans get along with everyone.
We just know we are superior.

Very telling statement. Taking over WHAT exactly?
The prisons?
"enable Republicans to peel away voters from a split Democrat party."
There are a whole lot of opportunities for reps to peel off dims, but they (the reps) seem clueless.
The fact that Democrats are for illegal immigration, are against school choice, and are for the weakening of the definition of marriage will not stop 95% blacks from voting Democrat. Maybe they should look at themselves in the mirror.
The first element?

The other, somewhat interlocking element is this one:

The"Mexican Flag Superior, American in Distress" is in the upper left corner...
That's not what we saw after Katrina.
"Blacks resent any group that comes to America and does well. This is especially true for groups that aren't white since it demonstrates that their own lack of success has nothing to do with race. Too bad black culture is stuck on stupid."

According to your statement, IF the new group-Illegal latinos- are doing so well, why are you trying to kick them?
