Yes, Baptists are independent of any authority outside the Bible and the congregation. Disavowing, and disassociating with people of Phelps ilk, who had a knowledge of the truth and turn from it, is the worst that can be done.
Phelps calling himself a Baptist doesn't make him one, any more than putting a license plate on a skateboard makes it an automobile.
I wish these pukes would have the guts to demonstrate when working people would have a chance to confront them.

Man it must be tough for those walking wounded servicemen to physically hold back. It was. There was one guy that appeared on a corner opposite to them. He had just returned from Iraq and did not understand what they were about. I explained the Phelpsian phenomenon to him and he got real pissed. He walked behind them and away from them NB on Georgia Ave and he had tears in his eyes when he did so.
I followed him to ensure he did not lose his cool. I thought he really was going to (rightfully) fly into a rage.

The pic of the woman standing on the flag would be enough to set me over the edge. Wish I could buy that soldier with tears a drink (if he wanted one) to let him know others are trying to hold it in also.
