The issue: The anti-immigration movement
Our view: The U.S. could be sowing the seeds of revolution south of its border.
The motives of the
anti-immigration crowd are already suspect, with many now wondering openly whether all of the concern about security and cultural heritage is a nice way of saying these folks prefer to keep the country from being overrun by people who, shall we say, aren't as white as them.
Not so sure about that? Why just last weekend we had the specter of a local Minuteman anti-immigration group picketing a Rockford area bank for having the temerity to market bank accounts to Mexicans visiting a mobile consulate, presumably in pursuit of legal status. These are tactics reminiscent of Serbia under Milosevic or even the early days of the Third Reich. If the anti-immigration zealots are comfortable with the idea of gangs of quasi-vigilantes protesting institutions solely because they cater to a single ethnic group, legal or not, then they shouldn't bristle when someone suggests that race might be a motivating factor.
But beyond the current high-stakes debate, it appears that not only did the far right underestimate the power of the backlash by Mexicans, Mexican-Americans and American business interests to their anti-immigrant pandering - some have equated it to kicking a sleeping giant - it increasingly looks like they just haven't thought the whole thing through.
To wit, at this writing, Mexico is in the midst of its own political season, set against the backdrop of a rising tide of leftist sentiment across South America. If we made felons of even a small percentage of undocumented workers and sent them home en masse - as GOP immigration legislation initially demanded - we'd indeed be sowing the seeds of revolution south of the border.
Rather than having Mexicans here working for the American dream, they'd be back there starving, seething and eager to exact revenge on the society that shut them out. No doubt the Hugo Chavezes of the world are watching the immigration debate with renewed interest. The U.S.'s rebuke of Mexico would be just the ideal catalyst for a new workers revolution on the nation's doorstep.

This is what the author compared the Minutemen to...The Third Reich.
Since I know most Freepers are great writers,I have provided his e-mail... I will let you folks tell this nit-wit what you REALLY THINK!
Bad Journalism ping please!
Good grief -- what kind of publication is this?
The ILLEGAL invaders who sneak into this country are trying to take away American Citizens freedom, are you willing to allow them to do that?
Think this is xenophobia? Than they have won, they want anti illegals to look like racists, THEY are the racists!
Make no mistake they have declared war.
Since I know without a doubt that the Journal Standard wants to report the facts and not spin, I assume you will correct the error ridden article that appeared in
"OUR OPINION"
First of all the "Anti immigrant" label you gave my organization is incorrect. We are Anti ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION, which is a violation of our laws in America.
These illegals have broken into our country and stolen jobs and services from the American tax payers.
I am the State Director of the Illinois Minuteman project and you forgot to mention that I am a woman of Mexican decent. So another error is the race card you are trying to play...strike that from the record also.
You said that the Minutemen bristle when someone suggests race as a motive, personally as a woman of mexican decent, I only bristle at bad journalism or when a paper tries to pass an op-ed piece as fact!
You said the minutemen picketed a Rockford bank, that is incorrect information, please retract that statement, it is not true, don't you have an standards at your paper or are you just trying to do it for the sensationalism?
I will give you credit though for what you spoke of correctly, don't underestimate the power of this Mexican American woman who understands the rule of law, the price of liberty and the ability to tell right from wrong.
As I organize Illinois and wake up the American sleeping giant, the only option illegal aliens will have is to go back to their own country and demand of Mexico, what they have no right to demand of our American government.
Our immigration policy has been set up for just that purpose - to provide an option to the Mexican/Central American underclass other than following Pied Piper Chavez into damnation. The author isn't wrong to identify that possibility, which most MSM commentators are completely (and perhaps willfully) overlooking, he's just wrong to suggest that people who oppose unlimited immigration are causing the problem. Mexico going Communist has been a concern for decades, and Chavez's emergence has heightened the risk.
If you can't make the distinction between immigration and illegal immigration, you are part of the problem, not part of the solution, and time is a-wasting...
believe it or not, it is just a daily paper in a small town of Freeport Illinois
He should have said the anti-illegal immigration. Big difference, but that wouldn't have fit his story line.
Is it too much to simply ask that our nation's laws be enforced?
Thats correct. These freaks need to go back home and overthrow their wealth government who treats them like sh@t!!
Ping
The idea is to expose them to a capitalist society so that a Chavez-style Communist utopia seems less appealing to them.
Judging by the sentiments expressed at the recent rallies, it isn't working too well.
Well, I wanted to give folks a chance instead of kicking the dog today, sound off at Gary Mays.
Wait! I thought Jesus on immigration was Romans 13!
OBEY THE LAW!!
